The Benefits of Ebook Technology

Updated on June 27, 2012

If you are thinking about purchasing an e-reader there are many positive benefits to know. These benefits have made the market look bright for the revolution of electronic books. It is understandable that many people maintain a special connection to printed books and enjoy holding the real thing. But, there is also the growing market of readers who have embraced the electronic version of their favourite book; and for good reason. The wave for electronic media offers many benefits that a printed version will never provide.

The interest in the Kindle, the Sony Reader, Kobo, Nook, and similar devices is helping to stimulate awareness for the list of growing options available to book lovers. E-readers are compact, portable and can carry an entire library on one DVD. This alone speaks volumes. With their capacity for storage, books with large page volumes become available, that might have otherwise been too expensive to produce (and purchase) in paperback. Ebooks also beat paper in price and convenience. The cost for an ebook is significantly cheaper to produce than paperback and they can be delivered almost instantly by download. This allows readers to receive information about current issues and events faster than ever. For book readers who still like to hold a paper version, ebooks can be printable, providing the best of both worlds.

As the demand for ebooks grows, the technology to produce them continues to evolve. Ebooks allow for the option of additional multimedia such as still images, moving images, and sound; all features that add a whole new dimension to reading. Furthermore, the technology for ebooks online permits thousands of people to be involved in reading simultaneously and also makes it possible for global searches of information inside the book. Even more, is that ebooks are good for the environment. They eliminate the need for cutting down trees and they also reduce the filling of landfills with old books. The fact that ebooks are downloaded does away with transportation costs and the pollution created with shipping. Ebooks are also preserved eternally from the wear and tear paper books endure.

With all the benefits that media technology offers, the ebook market is rising in popularity. Last year it grew an estimated 177%. It provides functionality, with value and price. There are also the new possibilities in multimedia, that will continue to be made available as technology evolves in this area. The future of ebooks gives book lovers something to get excited about! The printed book will always hold a special place in the reading world but the ebook market is attracting a growing number of readers, who want the benefits that only electronic media can offer.

I was always an anti-ebook person until I received my Kindle. It takes up less space than books(which, to someone living in an apartment,is a plus) and I find myself reading books I would have never picked up in a store due to their one dollar promotions and the accessibility. I'm also reading more now than ever because I don't have to go to a store to get new books!
