The Best of Life Is Still Free: a Poem

Val is a life-long student of the psycho-philosophy of living and a devoted practitioner of many techniques that enhance personal evolution.

They say that the best of life is free

and my own life could certainly attest to it

but what may not be so easy to see

is how inner freedom is the only one to prove it.

Freedom to think and feel whatever we choose

makes us detached from the mainstream greed

for it is impossible to ever lose

what we gave ourselves with no real need.

It's playfulness in heart with toys that are free

not the ones we buy to define who we are

not those we need for applause or an instant glee

but ones that fill with joy an old man's memoire.

Health is free, but we make it so expensive

by allowing sickness to be a part of living

and we make it an issue being so extensive

not seeing that health is within power of our believing.

And love is free, but we so often bribe to get it

or try so hard to be worthy of affection

then busy hating we may completely forget it

in a mutual distrust as our only true connection.

Happiness is free, but does anyone know it as yet

as trillions get spent for its many imitations

that making also free an ultimate regret

with only at funeral getting a standing ovation.
