The Button - Poetry

Updated on December 5, 2012

The big blue button on the big black box

With a notice overhead designed surely to fox you,

And even the most resolved of minds,

Read the sign.

Do not push the button, the small print said

Just in case you're puzzled in your head,

And don't understand the meaning of this sign,

If you push this button,

You've crossed the line...

So the big blue button on the big black box

Stayed un-pushed, while all the clocks

Showed days and months and years

Go by,

People read the sign, and wondered

Then one day, a lad came along,

With a simple mind and a thirst for fun,

This boy really didn't know how to read

So the message in the sign,

He did not heed...

So the big blue button on the big black box,

With the sign overhead designed surely to fox you,

Was at last, about to be pushed,

Then maybe we'll know

What's in the big black box...

Dear reader, an interlude,

For if you read on, it would be rude of me

Not to inform you, that you may go...

Once you learn of the fun he had...

So the boy pushed the button on the big black box,

And suddenly...

In stars and light,

And the boy was taken up

In a wonderful flight that

Took him to space, out and beyond,

The adventure he was having

Making him bond

With the universe, in a wonderful way

And when he returned to the earth one day,

People would ask, and he would say...

The big blue button on the big black box

With the notice overhead designed surely to fox you,

Had terms and conditions, that nobody read,

If you'd thought you had the time, you

Would have seen that they said...

If you choose to ignore this sign

And push this button,

You'll cross the line between

Life on Earth and space and time,

And your trip through the universe

Will be most sublime!

I don't think I have read a more clever poem in some time and I am voting this up - right after I push the button.

(I definately would have pushed the button - especially if it said "DON'T push the button).

Oh - I'm sharing this too!

Is that called "stepping outside the box?"

Great poem, and being somewhat of a rebel, I loved the message that I got from the poem (probably not the message you intended).....sometimes you have to take a chance and step out of your comfort level....toss aside the restraints....and go for it!

      Loved this one Jen!
