"The Carrot" by Eric Wayne Flynn

Updated on December 8, 2015

"The Carrot"

Dangling out in front of thee

The prize

Something to sink our teeth into

Nay, it sinks in and consumes you

The animal, the beast, the ignorant ape upon which they feast

And we bite blindly, into the wind

Empty and without, empty from within

So, we bite and bite, snapping our jaws

We know the process, we've seen it done before; spectators among the frenzied

And we clamp down

And we feed

And we fill ourselves, with nothing

For you see it's just air

Look at us biting, chomping and grinding away

For the carrot is a figment

Our imagination; contrived, the carrot was never there

These animals outside my window

Clopping along with this false sense of hunger

I see their ribs don't show

So no one is to know

And there is the catch, and they've got all of us

Clopping along

Well, most of us, for the carrot is given to a few

Just to cover up the illusion, devouring up all that we hold true

And there is the ultimate lie

Contrary sensations cast before our eyes

The colors

The bells

The whistles

The shiny things and the perceived necessity it is that they bring

The altered path, led astray

Clopping along

Chomping into the wind, filling up on air

Clopping along

Sinking and consuming this concept, this carrot that was never even there

Hi Vellur, the "carrot" is a tangible falseness (i.e. Celebrity, drugs, fast cars, sex) in which they anoint a chosen few to shower them with excesses and the masses see this and yearn to have said fame and excesses as their own; and they are told that yes you can obtain it and not only that you can obtain but that it is a just goal to strive for and it brings happiness. This then validates that the "carrot" does exist, but it is a contrivance and a manipulation and a lie so therefore an illusion, and so this mirage is something we continue to strive for, and of course we never reach the destination and we find ourselves wasting away in a desert of emptiness. Thanks for the visit, so there is a carrot and there is not a carrot and thus a paradox and I have heard it said that all paradox's are truths, and yes I agree we refuse to face reality, even as I write these words I can dream and conjure up false ideals, it is a daily practice for me to remind myself of this.

An interesting write and deep thoughts. We know that there is no carrot but we refuse to face reality, I guess.

I'm there Manatita... or on my way, but the average human on this planet is living in the five senses and unable to recognize spirit or soul; or indifferent to it, but you are right I do need peace; it is an ongoing process.

      Funny, Bro.

You are not far off. This plant is man; this plant is God. See, I just switched them around. (chuckle)

Seriously, I hear you. But you seem young and receptive. What else do you need? Peace.

Thanks Dana, you're right, even if the illusion is achieved, and it has been achieved by many (just not relative to the masses of course), and yet they remain empty.

Thanks Manatita, I can only hope and pray that I get to see the dawn of such a day.

Thank you Jodah, not too many people are "awake" to what is truly occurring in the world today. It's always good to hear from a like mind.

Wow! absolutely, positively, amazing. This poem gets into the heart of what the world is built on, foolish dreams. From the time we are born, we become blind to all the glitter and gold. And, we chase and chase after the carrot and if we conquer it we wonder why we still fill empty.

Awesome words. We will stop biting when we are full within, in a larger sense. Great poem!

Our Government are always dangling carrots in front of us to entice us to do or agree to this or that. Our employers do the same, as does big business, Department Stores, Banks etc etc. Most of these carrots are just tokens or not real, disguises for something more sinister in the fine print we never read. Many of us take a bight and come up chomping air as you say. Great poem Eric.
