The Chipko Movement

Updated on September 1, 2014

'The Chipko Movement' or 'Sticking To A Cause' was carried out by the ordinary villagers of Garwal who embraced trees and did not allow the commercial Loggers to cut them. This is a policy based on non violence. The term 'Chipko' means sticking and hugging trees to banish the tree cutters of Uttarakhand.Being led by Chandni Prasad Bhatt and Sunderlal Bahuguna, the Movement gained momentum in the 70s.

The villagers being aware of rapid deforestation plunged into a war against 'Nature Plunderers' on March 1974. A group of women at Reni village,in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand acted with 'Heart and Soul' against all forest destroyers. This action inspired hundreds of events of 'Saving Trees' at different places.

By early 80s the on going Movement had spread throughout India and the new policies protected plenty of trees in the Vindiyas and the Western Ghats. These were nothing but the after effects of the 'Chipko Movement'.Women were specially involved in saving trees and protested hand in hand with men.Hence, they have proved before the World that nothing is impossible. If we are united, we can create wonders.

Some other like Movements are:

'Sound Of Nature' : Movement against 'The Silent Valley Project'. It was about protecting the four million years old 'Rain Forests'.M.G.K Menon Committee reviewed the project and finally, scrapped it.

'Rescue Mission' :'Jungle Bachao Andolon' being undertaken by the Tribals of Singbhum District.

'Reaping A Change' :'Navdanya Movement' was led forward by Vandana Shiva.

'Different Route' :'The Green Doer' was being led ahead by Ashok Khosla.

'High Tide' : 'Narmada Bachao Andolan ' was a tremendous effort by Medha Patkar being joined by the others to save the sacred River Narmada and its surroundings.

Presently, we are going through the second decade of the 21st century and hundreds of 'Nature Saving Movements' ought to be undertaken everywhere to save pristine Forest regions.Evidently,it will save certain Animals from extinction.Depleting certain forest areas will bring about 'Global Warming',forcing us to use more Air conditioners and eventually, emission of more harmful gases into the air.

There are two ways to save ourselves.Either we have to stop illegal cutting of trees or replace with equal amount of trees being planted by us to bring about a balance in our Eco System.

The quality of Air we breathe in also determines our Health. To sum up, let us join hands and try to bring about a slow and steady balance in our Eco System by taking care of 'Plants and Trees'.
