The Dream - A Poem

Updated on January 31, 2013

Last night I had a dream about

The awful things you said,

The other night when

You were tired and

Should've gone to bed. But

I was tired aswell

My dear

We'd both been working hard, but

I'd never say those things to you,

And the emotions that were stirred

Seemed meaningless

In my dream...

Last night I had a dream that

I escaped and hid.

In a truck, all on my own

With a burner and a bed. I

Had my dog for company, and

We parked up somewhere nice,

I'd read books, and write

Poetry,

And wouldn't dream at night.

It seemed meaningless

In my dream...

Last night I had a dream that

You said sorry for my pain,

Instead of making excuses and

Driving me insane, just

Acting as if everything

Is still ok!. And

In my dream I

Loved you

And you were loving me, and

Then I wondered, In

My dream, Does this really

Mean

Anything?

Last night I didn't sleep

Too well, I

Kept waking up you see, my

Dreams and my

Imagination really

Bugging me.

I know that we're alright

My dear

And I'm not leaving you

But a sorry and

A loving kiss, really

Wouldn't be

Too much

To ask I think.

Or is it all just

Meaningless? A

Stupid, childish dream.

Wake up now, it's the

Thing to do

And then I will be free.

I love the evocative lovely picture you with which topped your dream wisdom poem. It really suits the "seeing from a higher perspective " the dream self has to find. The idea that we cannot change another is tough.

I enjoyed the touch of rhyme sequence here and there. it added to the flow. Dream on!

I know the pain and devotion in this poem really well. Sometimes people don't understand just how strong that 1 word sorry really can be. This is beautifully written.

Kashmir56, I have been away for a while and am so happy to be back and meeting all my friends here again! Thank you for reading and commenting, and the votes and share! I would just like to reassure everyone that although this piece was inspired by an altercation between myself and my man, we are absolutely fine and as happy as we were 12 years ago when we met! (Maybe less franticly happy... you tend to calm down with age... lol).

All the best to you from the riverbank in England (home at last....), Jen

Bravewarrior, thank you for your words, sound advice! I am lucky in that I have been with my husband now for 12 years, and although he struggles with the word "sorry" he actually very rarely has the need to say it! That's probably why it hurts so much if he does mess up, because I'm not used to it! :-)

You are quite right, I think there are probably many people who put up with being treated badly for far too long...

My husband is lovely by the way... :-)

All the best from the riverbank, Jen

Jennifer, the words "I'm sorry" seem to evade just about every man with whom I've had a relationship. Or they get up the next day and act like nothing happened. They get over it and don't realize when your heart and soul have been hurt, it takes days to get over it!

Sometimes, if the do say I'm sorry, the damage is already done and it's a moot point.

There comes a time when you have to question the frequency and the ways in which you are hurt. Is it worth it?

Very well said. It probably expresses the emotions of a lot of people.

One of the hardest things to learn is to simply say "I am sorry"....not to make excuses, not to rationalize behavior, but to simple own up to your part in a situation and move on. Listening to someone's true emotions and then validating them is so important in a relationship. Well done!

Emotions of last night poured out nicely whether you could sleep or dream, but for me its not childish. I hope this is only feeling for a poem. If its true then its good that you are allowing your emotion to flow out through poem. A tight hug and sorry can never be stupid for sure. Good poetry and all my votes up and shares.
