The Drifting Wind

Updated on December 14, 2017

I'm a writer, a poet, a dreamer. Born and raised in New York City. I live in the suburbs of Riga, Latvia. I have a wonderful cat named Sid.

The wind is my friend,

it pushes me along

and makes me want,

to spread my arms

and fly to the skies -

Into a whirlwind dance.

Bringing much joy,

just me and the drifting wind,

taking me over treetops

and making me feel so light.

I love the warm southern breezes,

but the cold north winds -

make me shiver.

Love to breeze along,

with the drifting wind,

it always fills my heart -

with the longing for adventure.

Never liked a day completely still,

when the drifting wind sleeps.

Love open windows,

that make curtains fly about,

always love spending time -

in good company.

The wind whispers secrets to me

and brings greeting from friends -

long gone but remembered still.

Creating ripples of waves,

upon the surfaces -

of lakes, rivers, seas and oceans.

Where seagulls dance merrily

and lazily drift along.

The spring wind that heralds in,

a season full of flowers blooming

and butterflies dancing by.

The summer breezes,

that make me delight,

in each cooling puff of wind –

on lazy summer days.

When autumn comes,

the north wind comes blowing in.

It sends colorful leaves,

high into a crisp, clear sky.

Until the winds of winter,

turn the world into ice and snow.

No matter the season,

the drifting wind is my friend,

it sings many songs to me.

Windy days just right for ,

dancing down the road -

just the drifting wind and me.

So true Shauna. For reasons that it seems at time I can hear a melody through the blowing wind it inspires.

I can relate, Rasma. The wind inspired me to write a poem as well. The wind speaks, but not everyone can hear it.

Hello Gypsy - The imagery worked. It carried me along the journey. The thought 'incredible lightness of being' comes to mind.

Glad this brought such wonderful memories for you Threekeys. My childhood friends and I too tried to fly with the wind.

Thank you Manatita. I love Roussos voice and many of his songs. I am into whirlwind dancing.

Thank you Cynthia. I love watching storms blow in in the summertime.

Thank you Louise. Yes, after a very hot day a cooling breeze is delightful.

I just went with the rhythmic flow just like the breeze. Couldn't stop myself from reading it . It is so beautiful!

How beautifully you wove it all ! Wind is always busy in whispering such nice things to us, but you caught it all so perfectly ! A fantastic poem indeed !

You are growing as a writer. Your images are more subtle but every bit as powerful. :)

I really enjoyed reading your poem. On a hot day, a light breeze is lovely.

I enjoyed your expressions and experiences with the wind. A really windy day is exhilarating as long as it's not the cold north wind. And those gently breezes can lull you when you're sitting on a summer Southern porch, rocking as the sun sets. Then there is the wind that goes from a gently breeze to that tumultuous whirlwind that heralds a coming storm. Nothing like it.

      Your poem was beautifully written.

      Take care.

Well, here is an old favourite. I don't recall seeing him in your series on artistes. He has a very beautiful 'windy' voice.

Nice change in melody ... tempo ... rhythm ... are you into a whirlwind dance and not a dervish whirl? Ecstatic!!

Loved this poem. Your imagery invoked the fond memories I have of my school friend and I pretending we could run and fly with the big gusts of warm westerly winds that would blow through our town. We laughed and giggled so hard when we played this little magical game of our ours. Thank you for taking me back in time when the world was magical and mysterious place for me.
