The Epidemic Scourge
The contents of this hub may be shocking. Readers, be forewarned.
This poem was inspired by the recent deaths of several young people I knew personally, as a result of prescription drug overdose, both doctor prescribed and bought on the street, and the addiction I see ravaging the world around me. It is written in memory of these and the countless other lives lost, the lives currently being consumed, and the families being destroyed by this evil. God, have mercy on them all!
The Epidemic Scourge
It is an epidemic scourge
that ravages throughout our land...
gripping body, soul, and spirit
with it's sly, addictive hand.
Though prescribed, too freely given,
pills possess with dark allure.
They've found their way into the streets
and into hands that seek pain's cure.
Greed propels the onslaught.
Ethics pale where money flows.
Once a taste has taken over,
morals wither and craving grows.
Oxys, roxys, bars, and joy juice...
prescription drugs that take control,
sold on every street and corner,
incarcerate without parole.
First they lure, and then, they capture.
Their hunger cannot be denied...
and if allowed to take possession,
the grave they dig won't be defied.
Respecters of no age or station,
pills chain the body, heart and soul...
destroying families, life, and spirit,
exacting unrelenting toll.
They torment all, not just the addict,
drain the life from all involved,
break the hearts of those who care.
This rampant curse grows, unresolved.
It is an epidemic scourge
that ravages throughout our land...
destroying our very heart and spirit
with a virulent, unbridled hand.
