The Final Test

Updated on April 15, 2013

These poems are from a poetry contest on Goodreads The poems has top deal with Cadavers...hope you enjoy my entries

The body now lay bare and still
Its sight gave to some a somber chill
To work on one pronounced as dead
Yet one wonders of the life it lead

Students gather round with intent gaze
As the lesson plan for them was laid
To open up the cadavers chest
While skilled eyes grade them on their best

As one student raised her stainless knife
To open what once was some loved one’s life
She slowly lowers her trembling blade
Knowing this can make or break her grade

She presses the blade lightly to the skin
Then takes a breath and pushes in
She stops and fear begins to show
Blood starts to seep and then to flow

Her look of shock as the bleeding starts
A request of help on the instructor’s part
She dropped the knife and began to cry
The cadaver they gave her was still alive

Night shift at the Morgue

She thought she heard a noise so she spun around to see
But there was nothing there only lines of dead bodies
The morgue was such a quiet place at night when all was still
The mind could play its tricks and oft gave her unnerving chills

She took a calming breath and went back to the autopsy
And tried to find the reason why this death came to be
As she wrote down in the notes everything she found
A shiver ran up her spine as again she heard the sound

She slowly turned around again to see what it might be
But once again she found there was nothing there to see
She slowly walked along the line of bodies lying there
Beds lined up side by side, sheets over the cadavers lying bare

As she passed each one their toe tags told of where each body came
But after years spent working in this place they all now look the same
When she reached the other end, again she took another breath
And as she ran her fingers through her hair she said I need a rest!

The hours passed slowly by as the cold night lingered on
The wall clock rang the chimes at three with its same melodic song
She placed another body in the cooler along the wall
And brought in three arrivals waiting outside in the hall

She walked towards the front to start the next corpse there in line
Unaware of another corpse slowly approaching from behind
Then she again heard a noise and turned to see what it could be
The walking dead cadaver was the last thing she’ll ever see
