The First Kick

By Tony DeLorger © 2011

We human’s are quirky beings, heavily invested in our rituals and addictions. Coffee is one such addiction that for some represents a lifestyle, a part of daily life that is irreplaceable. Without that fix, the day could not be survived, not attended with any meaning.

Coffee culture is now just about global with cafes everywhere servicing a world of addicts and devotees’ morning, noon and night. That humble bean has become a billion dollar enterprise, a commodity machine that dictates so much of our conscious thought, through cafes, advertising and culture. Hope you enjoy my poem- an ode to the bean.

The First Kick

By Tony DeLorger © 2011

The morning throng of hapless wanderers in kitchens grasp for kettles,

with eyes half closed from slumber deep they find a chair and settle.

Until the sound of steam alive imbues the coffee rich derive,

a conscious mind in worldly strife, first sip a panacea.

Not till then does life commend a day begun and dreams amend,

for coffee kicks the life forsake a day fulfilled with fervour make.

Showers rain and shavers pain in rush to dress and meetings gain,

to pay the piper please the boss and work for blood without remorse.

For without our kick we’d stay in bed, unconscious to the world we’ve made,

unwilling to absolve our sins and get up and do it all again.

It may be silly it may be trite but without coffee what would be our plight,

that rich and aromatic brew does save our waning human zoo.

Here's to the bean!

sorry no help here either Tony! I used to "have to have" my morning coffee with my morning cigarette. Since I gave up the cigarettes, I no longer "have to have" my coffee. Although I do still have a cup or two each morning. I would never have gone to a place to drink coffee if you couldn't smoke there. I don't like all the flavored coffees and creams either. I loved the poem though! Remember the 50s song, "Where have all the flowers(addicts) gone?"

I prefer herb tea. I can drink it any time. Good article.

I prefer hot tea over coffee, but I still drink coffee every morning with my husband. Decaf. My system can't take the caffeine kick!

      Great poem.

      Namaste.
