The Fool's Lament - A Poem

Updated on January 16, 2014

"I was seldom able to see an opportunity until it had ceased to be one." - Mark Twain

When wisdom waved I turned my head
When she called I pretended not to hear
When second, third and fourth chance knocked
I carried on as if they hadn't appeared
Regret, it is an aching thing
That burrows in the soul
And grows its roots of bitterness
That choke all sense of hope
The heart, it is a broken thing
When it refuses to be free
And amends cannot revive the promise
Of all that will not be

Thanks vespawoolf. I have to admit, I stole that idea - the personification of the wisdome - from the book of Proverbs.

How true! Most opportunities are lost as we do not recognize them.

Your words are full of wisdom, Crystal. It says so much about our ignorance in understanding life's opportunities.

Crystal, it's sad when the heart refuses to open up. Your poem states that beautifully.

Good evening, Crystal; this is touching and hopefully, releasing. Many have said that the writing heals and I believe it. ~Marilyn
