The Hours of the Day

Updated on February 23, 2015

Morning brings the rising sun

With bright orange rays

Rising in a blue sky

Like upon an empty canvas

Appears the glowing sun

It makes me feel happy

In the early morning

Seeing a world all shiny and new

Just emerging from the dark of night

As I listen to the songs of the first morning birds

With anticipation of the new day

As morning steps into afternoon

The brightness has mellowed

And there is a golden glow all about

It makes me feel so differently

And a little sad that they day is beginning

To ever so slowly sail away

It always brings about

A certain nostalgic sadness

When I see the sun

Late in the afternoon

I know that it will soon

Be looking for the horizon

To fade away for another evening

Sadness overwhelms me at twilight

As purple shadows gather

Then I delight in the reddish sunset

As those last rays still streak above the sky

And finally a sad goodbye

To the sun till morning comes again

Leaving the nighttime for reflections

And memories of another day

Gypsy - This may be my favorite of your poems so far. Very well written and so evocative of both the visual and the emotional changes we experience in a single day. I especially love these lines...

Rising in a blue sky -- Like upon an "empty canvas"

I know that it will soon -- Be "looking" for the horizon

Leaving the nighttime for reflections -- And memories ....

      Just lovely. Theresa

Gypsy, simply beautiful; sometime we just want the day to linger a little longer to hold back the night, but the sun always rises. Nicely done.

My moods travel with the sun and its surrender to the night. This is a beautiful reflection and poem. I love Cat Stevens too.

I really like this one---it is a beautiful depiction of emotions tied to the sunlight and light of day as it wanes, and then the new hope of a new day again. I identify with it too. And I absolutely love Cat Stevens/Yusuf Islam---what a gentle soul!

Lovely poem, Gypsy. I, too, love to watch Grandfather Sun rise in the early morning hours, then make his journey across the sky. I get up before sunrise, make some coffee, then sit out on my patio. I listen to the night sounds fade away, anxiously await for the sounds of the morning birds waking up and singing their joy. Then the sun finally begins to peek over the little mountain where I watch for it, it is a new beginning, a joyful time of day.

      I so enjoyed your poem.

What a wonderful way to express and visualise the coming of morning through to the end of the day. I love the way you shift with ease from each time of day into the different moods that the sun brings in contrast to the twilight - beautiful! I think you've also captured wonderfully how our memories and thoughts are stimulated and changed by progressing day.

To the utter annoyance of friends and family, I am a true morning girl. My favorite time of the day is as the sun is coming up. Sitting quietly while listening to the world wake up is one of Mother Natures most awesome spectacles.

You captured the beautiful of our surroundings so well.
