"The Legend" by Eric Wayne Flynn

"The Legend"

No cameras

No commercials

No coverage

Just a game in the park

A battle with ones self, finding one self in the dark

Shooting stars sinking buckets with a splash

Dropping floaters off the stairs with a kiss

Dropping dimes to imaginary men with an assist

To a big in the low post

Here comes the double team, kick out to a shooter

Unleash the J

He can still reach the cookie jar

A basketball mind an array of skills

Making himself better by building a team

The Legend

Finds ways to compensate for his shortcomings

Knowledge of self

Worth the price of admission

Getting out on a break is getting tougher in this transition

The one where the legs go limp

Tough times lay ahead for The Legend, this chimp

Called a chump a million times

Still on the courts a few times you'll find

The chump getting wet in the rain dropping net

Drip drop

Flick flop

Bip bop

Boom

Splish splash

Crash glass

Break out

Brooms

The Legend sweeps the court with vision acquired in wars

A handle on things, but sometimes he will lose his grip

Sometimes The Legend even falls, he trips

Burning his flesh because it's there

Rip it off and watch the bones hit the floor

Diving for glory

Digging deep for treasures

Praise and accolades

The roar of a crowd that never was comes to a fade

The Legend was just a myth the boy had made

The first person we are against is ourselves

A tough matchup

In the mirror with our greatest competition

Unrelenting in the quest to be heroes

To find perfection

Just for a moment

A thing of beauty

A jump shot against death

Well written. I believe we are our worst enemy. Sometimes we strive for perfection; only to fail.
