Do you remember Little Golden Books?

This great treasury of books have been around for over 70 years and are still available today.

I came across a Little Golden Book while looking for a present for my great nephew, and it reminded me of when I had bought them for my own children and grandchildren. Well, since I hadn't purchased one of these books in a while I was happy to see so many popular titles still available.

When looking for a special gift, I was delighted to purchase and give one of these affordable and traditional books to my great nephew for his birthday. It also prompted me to look at my own library of children's books that I purchased and saved for my children and grandchildren. As I revisited my library of children's books in my home, I found at least 20 titles still in very good shape with its significant gold binding and cardboard covers. These books are certainly durable and can be passed from generation to generation.

When looking at the history of "A Little Golden Book", I found that not much has changed with good reason. These recognized form of books are a legendary item and they will probably be around for another 70 years. First published by Simon and Schuster, these books were made to be affordable starting at 25 cents. The purchase price has changed a bit but they are still affordable and only cost up to 3.99 and available at bookstores like Barnes and Noble and toy stores like Toys R Us as well as online at

Over 2 Billion Copies Sold

Since the beginning, over 2 billion Little Golden Books have been purchased in its entire history. Great titles have also been recognized as being a "Little Golden Book" such as the "Poky the Little Puppy" and "Tootle the Train" Little Golden Series. Disney books are also a must when looking at these treasures with fairy tales like "Beauty and the Beast" and "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs".

Sesame Street's character books and Richard Scarry's Series of books also have flourished with titles like "The Monster at the end of this Book", starring Grover and "Richard Scarry's Best Word Book Ever". Lassie, Captain Kangaroo, Rainbow Brite and Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer also show how important these little treasured books really are by making their own appearance in A Little Golden Book. No children’s story was left behind when it came to being a part of the Little Golden Books empire including "Charlotte's Web" and "The Little House Series".

Give a Golden Gift

So remember when you are looking for a gift for the child in your life, look for these great icons of reading and pick up one or two for your little one so that they can also enjoy these great stories. I still have my little library of golden books, why not start one for your little ones today.

Today the little Golden Books are a part of Random House Children's Books.

My daughter picked out a Dora the Explorer Golden book at a school book fair this past week and I've read it to her every night. The Monster at the End of the Book is still one of my all-time favorites.
