The Man Who Tempted Fate

Christopher Columbus ~ A Rewrite

Controversy swirls about
the mention of your name...
History books cannot agree
on the merits of your fame.

And those of us, of skeptic bend,
who question fact and lore...
may add the facts together
but the total can't ignore!

Some say you were a hero,
a legend in your time...
Others claim that neither
rings true in history's rhyme.

I can not help but contemplate
the veracity behind
tales that are conditioned by
a historian's state of mind.

But one thing I am sure of...
now, we'll never know what's true!
For history's been recorded from
the writer's point of view...

Controversy swirls about
the mention of your name...
And history books cannot agree
on the merits of your fame...

Though the legacy you left behind
may be subject to debate...
Christopher Columbus,
you were a man who tempted Fate!

Besides, we all know all about hot blooded spaniards. I know I'm related in some small way, and no matter what you both might say, I believe it of you two too.

So It's time to discover that new world in a beautiful wood boat I'm building for us right now!!!

Thank you, most kindly, MO! I am tickled! It has taken me a good while to rewrite my original...and to do it with objectivity, rather than a slant...

Excellent poetic observations. The mariners of old had one thing in spades, and that was raw courage!

He achieved many things, but could he write poetry to match yours? I rest my case. Ouch that hurt.

WillStarr, I, indeed, agree. This is a much more benign piece about CC than the first, more inline with what I stand for, overall...lol! I thank you for your read and comment!

attemptedhumour, thank you, kindly! I don't know if Mr. Columbus is the hero he is purported to be but he did have guts, I will give him that! Now, did he write poetry???

Very well done and so true. We can only guess at much of history "But one thing I am sure of...

now, we'll never know what's true!

      For history's been recorded from

the writer's point of view..." If only we could be sure of the information that was recorded...great poem :-)

Ha! You caught me with this one, Marsha! What a daring piece, love the play of words and creativity of your mind, history is always full of twists and turns, we never know...depends on the angle and point of view. Clever poem!

Thanks, Max. This is an interesting take. My youngest son is a bit of a history buff, and does not hold to the version we are taught in school that Christopher Columbus is a hero...truth is, he was no angel but one thing is for sure...he was a gutsy guy and he did, indeed tempt fate on more than one occasion!
