The Morning Wake

By Tony DeLorger © 2013

Daylight edges its way into the room,

like a silent butler nudging the days beginning,

clothes laid out, breakfast on a tray,

aromas that wake the deepest oblivion.

But alas empty the room, but for sun,

shards creeping, dust swirling,

and minds clutching at a distant reality,

like a faint echo not quite understood.

Shards expand, elongate,

and warmth imbues the snug darkness,

like a thousand spider legs tugging at the sheets,

unwrapping an unwilling cocoon.

Then like a freight train passing,

cognisance assaults the senses,

and thoughts of responsibility piece themselves together,

a remorseful sigh escapes into the micro-world of light.

Hearts sink, mood shifts,

and that dreaded word tries to form in a dry mouth,

MONDAY! First a mumble, then a cry,

and even the spiders run for cover.

Then feet touch Terra-firma,

blood surges, nerves twitch and eyes dare to see,

each movement now an act of memory alone,

and day is judged officially begun.
