The Nest

The Nest

High within its leafy branches,
nestled close to tree top's breast,
sits a bundle, crafted, woven,
a hand-made home, a tidy nest.

Built with care to house her offspring,
securely set and tightly knit,
the nest will hold her precious cargo
upon which she will, patient, sit.

In due time, her eggs will hatch to
yield from each a fragile bird.
They huddle close within the nest,
from which their hungry cries are heard.

Then, begins the endless chore to
feed her hungry, noisy chicks...
she hunts and gathers juicy worms
and bugs to serve her mealtime mix.

Within a week or two they're ready
to try their wings and learn to fly...
The mother bird is their instructor
to demonstrate, then bid them try.

And off they go into the world to
make their way and have their own...
Now, mother 's nest is bare and empty
"My!", she sighs, "how time has flown!"

Simon, thank you! During the time I spent at my sister's farm, I was fairly obsessed with this one particular nest...every day, several times of day, I would go to that tree and just sit beneath it and watch and snap away...I bet I must have taken over 300 shots of that silly nest! The close up of the baby birds Jamie shot for me because I was too scared to climb the ladder to the top...being afraid of heights and all but those two shots he got make the piece, I think....I so appreciate your visits and comments...make my day, you do!

Chatkath, thank you! Its funny, this little hub and how it came about...I have spent a fair amount of time in the past month at my sister's farm, where these pics were taken, due to the passing of her husband. I noticed this little nest early on just after her eggs had hatched and every single day I would go out and sit and watch it, from the ground and take pictures...then one day I convinced my nephew and my son to get the ladder out and conned my son into climbing that ladder up into the tree to get a couple of close-ups, which he did, God bless his soul! I am afraid of heights and wanted to do it myself but just couldn't get far enough up that ladder! Anyway, by the time we finally left the nest was empty and that is the inspiration behind the poem, that and the fact that my "nest" is now empty, as my children are all grown...thank you for your visit and awesome comment!

What a delight to read and start my day. A beautiful little tale of the creation of a family and just like our own families, they come then they go. And just like the mother bird we also lament "how time has flown", as our nests become empty. The images also are awesome. Voted up and awesome. Thank you, tnderhrt23, for sharing this gem.
