The Broken Mirror
I wandered off the beaten path into a lovely wood...
Before me, bathed in golden glow, a dainty fairy stood.
I was not expecting her. She startled me, indeed...
She was such a splendid sight, I could but pause and cede.
I heard the faintest melody, as soft as a baby's sigh,
crooning in the gentle wind from afar, and yet close by.
Within her hand, a gilded glass of shiny, burnished sheen,
a finely crafted, hand-held mirror, one fit for the finest queen.
Our eyes were locked in silent gaze. I was quite mesmerized...
A tiny smile played on her lips. She looked quite unsurprised.
It seemed like an eternity, that moment when we met.
She seemed vaguely familiar... like a misty faint vignette.
Finally, she spoke softly, her words in sweetest tune...
a lilting, child-like voice that very nearly made me swoon...
"Come here, my friend, I've waited...'Tis I, who bade you come.
I have brought a gift for you...Come now, sweet, don't be glum.
She reached her hand out to me and gently drew me near...
I was simply powerless and yet, I knew no fear.
Then she placed into my hand the exquisite, hand-held glass.
Gazing deep into my eyes, she spoke in graceful chasse...
"It's not gone unnoticed by the Fairy Mother Queen.
There was a grave injustice done that has not gone unseen...
It was a broken mirror that was placed into your hand
on the day that you were born into this world, unmanned.
On this day, now, I present new vision for your eyes...
a mirror that will truth reflect, a mirror that won't lie.
Look into this mirror now and tell me what you see..."
the dainty fairy winked and smiled and waited patiently.
Tentative, I peeked into the golden crystal glass,
At first it looked all hazy, then what I saw left me aghast!
The face I saw reflected gazed intently back at me,
a face that shined with beauty I could not believe was me.
It was a face I recognized but one I'd viewed with dread.
The face i saw within this glass now smiled at me, instead.
It was my intent to speak the wonder in my mind but
in a flash she vanished, not a trace she left behind.
All I had that lingered was the mirror that wouldn't lie...
with new perceptions from a glass that I could not deny.
I shall always cherish the memory of that day...
when I wandered off the beaten path and the fairy came my way.
