The One Left Behind

Updated on November 25, 2012
Source

Standing before the mirror...

hand to soggy face...

the eyes of the other woman soulful...

in disgrace...

not because she was disgraceful...

because she lost her place...

Another who somehow was more fit...

took that which was hers...

she stood there now to discover the fault...

she could feel the years...

looking she could see them...

Inside there seemed to be not much difference...

If insides were the issue though...

she wouldn't be standing before the mirror...

perhaps another mirror and another face...

No, inner age didn't tell the tale...

Perhaps it was a matter of sex...

she had given all but maybe it wasn't enough...

to be standing here like this was almost an honor then...

She could change, she supposed, in that way...

that would be a disgrace...

but what she wouldn't do for him...

did she really know?

Her replacement had him now...

another tear stained her cheek...

this wasn't helping her inquisition...

yet at the heart of the matter it was there now...

A matter of imposition...

what was she to do?

was there anything to say?

was he even the man she knew before,

a man she would want to stay?

She didn't know and that's the rub...

he wasn't there for her to explore that thought...

she only had herself to examine...

and that didn't seem a lot...

not enough to come to a decision...

it was all she had though...

Somewhere behind her eyes...

a voice screamed her absolution...

"Its him, its him!" ,that voice declaring...

she couldn't hear it clear...

It provided buzzing...

an annoyance with the ring of truth and yet...

Another time those thoughts might give some comfort...

not now...

now she faced down her enemy...

the only enemy left standing there...

wanting to find fault...

but she couldn't...

not because she lacked any fault...

rather because her heart, too broken to stand up...

too weary to carry the sword pointed or not...

too exhausted to carry the scales...

eyes too bleary with tears to read any verdict were she capable...

maybe tomorrow...

not tonight...

without a backwards glance she threw herself to her sleep...

crying into the pillow till the shadows claim her.

It never ceases to amaze me how you can see through to the heart of the matter so completely and express it in writing so clearly.

Great writing, and thanks for caring. She to whom you refer is grateful for your concern, and she is slowly healing.

Yeah, I met someone recently that had this problem, my fancy ran away with me or my heart. I do hope all goes well with her.

Been there...and it's awful, but eventually things have a way of getting better. The score is won. You learn to like yourself first. Life and Love go on, and someone better comes along.
