The Peaceful War

Updated on May 25, 2013

We spent way too many years

Growing further and further apart

We've shed so many silent tears

That we hide deep within our hearts

Even though we both know

It should be time to let go

We're fighting a peaceful war

Each struggling with our love

And neither one can take much more

We've both had quite enough

Do we give up and walk away

Or do we stay this way

There's never been any hate

We still like each other

But as we sit here and wait

Our hearts go on aching and suffer

There is nothing that we can do

To bring back the love that we once knew

We're fighting a peaceful war

Each struggling with our love

And neither one can take much more

We've both had quite enough

Do we give up and walk away

Or do we stay this way

So together we keep trying

To bring back our old dreams

And together we keep lying

It's like chasing moonbeams

They simply cannot be caught

Whether we want them or not

We're fighting a peaceful war

Each struggling with our love

And neither one can take much more

We've both had quite enough

Do we give up and walk away

Or do we stay this way

Tell me, how longer can this go on

Before all our sanity is gone

Do we just walk away

Or do we stay as friends this way

Ain't that the truth in many cases? No passion,no hate, just lukewarm, sickly left-overs of a love gone cold-such a shame that it ever reaches this stage, sometimes.Counselling, education and experiential understanding is imperative to help get back on track,if the couple want their relationship to survive,it seems.A good, honest rhyme.Thumbs Up!

      Yours Sincerely,

      Romeo's Quill

      Shan,

Oh how I know this place! I suppose there is coming back from there if 2 people want it enough, but in my experience one wants it too late after the other has already allowed there emotions to deplete. Enjoyed as usual shan... and I will check in with you tomorrow girly!

      Your sis,

      Cat

This is a sad scenario when two people who love each grow apart over the years, and then they really do not know each other. When we stop communicating in a relationship, then there is no relationship.

      Voted up ++++ and sharing

      God bless, Faith Reaper

Thanks Romeos Quill. Yes, I think it does very much have to be mutual to repair damage like that.

That is true Faith Reaper. No communication or bad communication. . .both make it hard to maintain a relationship.

It may be that keeping the intensity of first passion is an exhausting pipe dream. As you age, it is a comforting and beautiful thing to draw on all the deeper friendship areas of your relationship. Of course, in order to do that, you need to have started the relationship with friendship before passion - often an unusual requirement these days!

I don't know about the first part of your statement, Vicki, but the last part is very true. Deeper romantic bonds seem to come from first developing a close friendship. But, then, that comes from sharing similar morals and values, as well as other commonalities and interests.

Ah, that's okay... everything is a learning experience, right? What doesn't kill us makes us stronger... at least that's what I keep telling myself :D

Yes, Cat. I suppose you are right. It's all in how we handle the things life throws at us or that our own choices throw back in our faces later.

Voted up and beautiful. That is the hardest part of relationships when you just don't know what to do. To go on separately or try to get together once more.

Sad poem, but so true for so many who struggle in relationships. I know that feeling all too well. Great poem and expression of feelings. Voted it up!! : )

I'm sorry that you know that feeling dreamseeker2. :( I must say, though, that I am a bit gratified that you can sense emotion in it, as this was one completely from imagination.

Thank you for your visits and support. Both are very much appreciated. :)

Oh Shan! I just wrote a poem about heaven and hell, but - THIS is pure PURGATORY!

No one can give advice about something so difficult and personal, so - i'll just say this: As far as we know - we only go around once - live life to the fullest - hurt as few people as possible - including YOURSELF!

      tight hugs, my friend!

Leslie, you've got to be one of the sweetest people on Earth! This one is not a personal poem, but the advice you just gave is awesome nonetheless!

I'm glad to hear this came from your imagination rather than your experience. So many fall into the latter category and it's a hard place to be. Your poem is even better because it evokes emotions that you haven't experienced and hopefully, won't. That's a sign of a great imagination and a taleted writer. Thanks for sharing this one!

You have what all good poets possess...a keen insight into the human experience and an understanding of what makes us all tick...your poetry is a joy to read.

Thanks, Bill! Considering this is not inspired by personal experience whatsoever, that's a great compliment.
