The Purpose of "About the Author" Page of a Book

There is a section in every book titled “About the Author”. What is that section? What is the purpose of it? Is it just a bio? No! There is so much more to an “about” section at the end of a book and so much potential for getting a reader’s attention.

Tells the Readers Who You Are

Obviously, the “About the Author” section is about the author. But it is not just there to tell who the author is and where she live. Honestly, there is more to you as an author than saying, “Jane Doe lives in Miami, Florida with her husband and three cats. She enjoys hiking and swimming.” Is that all Jane Doe is? What about more? Granted, you don’t want to write a novel in this section, but you need to consider giving a more in depth about section.

Let me tell you something from a reader’s point of view. They don’t want too much thrown at them at once, but they also don’t want to be wanting more. If they read the section about the author and then walk away wondering why it was put there, well, something is wrong. What was written obviously didn’t say much about the author and his/her talent.

Make them want to know more. You might think your life is boring, but are you a writer or not? A writer doesn’t produce boring “about” sections. They give them a flair that only a writer can produce. They give them character and draw the reader in. Write your “about” as though you are writing a story while being concise.


What It Includes

Okay, we know that this section of the book needs to include the author’s name. If you don’t put that in, then don’t write the section. But it needs to be about more than that. You need to add more info to reach out to the readers.

Now, let’s explore the other needed aspects.

  • Where do you live? – Please don’t give them your street address, but tell you’re the city and state you live in. If you don’t want to put the city down, please put the state. This helps you to connect with your readers. When I read that someone is from Kentucky or Alabama, I perk up and pay closer attention. These are people from my areas. It is always good to make a connection with you readers. If you are from various states or other countries, note that. I always find it interesting when someone is from another country or has lived in places I have dreamed of visiting. It encourages me to follow them on the various social networks.
  • What do you like to do? – Are you an avid water-skier? Maybe you love to mountain climb. List out your hobbies. Readers might see some of these hobbies in your writing or be intrigued about this new set of facts. I know that you might think what you do is boring, but you can make it sound interesting. Do you like to crochet? Tell your readers that you crochet as you plot your next romantic scene or murder. Turn your hobbies into something intriguing. Do you like to cook? Maybe say, “I love to cook. As I concoct new recipes, I devise new scenes and new twists to my stories. That might be why the location is always something tied to the type of cooking I’m doing.” You’re a writer. You can do it.
  • What other books have you written? – Tell people what other books you have written. If they are reading your “about” section, they are interested in you and your work. That means you might have more people reading your works if they know about it. Research is showing that when an author puts the information of their books at the end of one book, even an eBook, they are finding more and more sales.
  • Have you won any contests or awards? – Have you won a writing contest or have your works receive any acknowledgements? If so, list them. Let people know that your writings have been given acknowledgements. That will interest them. They will be curious to know more about you if you have and will even search for the award winning piece.
  • Where can you be found? – People like to virtually stalk the authors they like. By doing so, they get all the latest news on them and about their new releases. Share with them your facebook page, twitter account, Pinterest, your website and other places you can be found. No author has ever regretted adding this information.

Make It Creative

If you really want to get a reputation with readers that will have them coming back for more, get creative with your “About the Author” section. Don’t just say:

Jane Doe lives in State with Spouse and two point four kids. She hikes and loves to watch TV.

That might be right but is so boring. Make it creative. Have some fun with it. You are an author. You can pull from your creative pools and have your muse help you. Try something like this:

  • Jane Doe has claimed the State of Chaos as her home but physically resides in Florida where she regularly stalks sunrises and devours lattes.
  • Jake Smith spends most of his contemplating the murders found in his novels. The time has paid off as he has won numerous awards….

Get the idea on how to have fun with it. Make your readers laugh. Have them want to read more. Use words that denote color or the genre that you write. Again, have fun with it. If you write mysteries, use phrases that only a mystery story would have. Shoot, turn your “about” page into a mystery. Make it romantic if you write romances.

Make your “about” page reflect you and your work. Readers will remember you for having something so unique and original. You won’t regret it and might find yourself getting more attention.

      About the Author

      The author of this hub has given some great tips for "about the author" page for other authors, which tells a lot of things about her.

      * She is very helpful, and has shared some great tips to utilize the "about.." section of book to its full potential.

      * She is not just creative, but wants to inspire others to be creative as well.

      * The poll included is quite informative too and will give you a sample from hub pages community of percentage of people who will actually make all this creativity worth while.

      Really good information for a writer. That page does influence the reader; if it is creative enough for the reader to remember, he or she might have look for other books even before reading the one in hand. Thanks!

      Good article. When I published my eBooks on Smashwords, and at first I did not put too much into the author bio. Sure I had one, but eventually I edited my About Author page to include bits and pieces about me because sometimes readers want a little more of the author "behind" the pages.

      For instance, I include just a short paragraph about me and what I like to write and the next section I offer places for readers to visit me.

      On the next page are my books.

      Actually, I'm preparing a new book for Kindle. I thought I had written a pretty adequate "about" page, but I never thought of linking to my social media pages. So thanks for the save. Thumb to the sky and a click on useful--but no acknowledgements page in the book to add you to.
