The River in Autumn

Updated on September 18, 2015

Strolling along country roads

down by the river

the sky no longer blue

little choppy waves

upon the water

gulls like white sugar cubes

bobbing upon the water

as the river rushes along

the grass still green

the trees all bare

the scrunching of withered leaves

beneath my feet

but if I look upon the country road

I can dream some

imagining how it all looked

upon on a summer’s day

when the sky was shining

like blue sapphires

and the sun was warm

colorful flowers all about

and the river like a green ribbon

with sparkling emeralds

shining beneath the sun

even the gulls seemed to be dancing

and I know as soon as I look up

what it all will look like now

like stepping through a magic mirror

into a world of stark reality

I slipped my hands into my pockets

and would have been content

to just go on dreaming

following that country road

when something wet hit my cheek

gazing upwards I saw

several snowflakes dancing in the wind

and now I knew

winter would soon be here

it was so very near

time to put away my summer dreams

the river soon would sleep

in frozen splendor

with shiny reflections

of the world around

as a haze winter sun

streams through the clouds above

and I’ll be the first one

to greet the river

in the springtime

when it finally breaks free

Love it - makes me think of the changing seasons that are right on our doorstep. Love the ending as it reassures us of the light after the darkness.

People who are frozen in an unsatisfying place, need to break free, too. Good observations here.

Seen 'em..those gulls that looked like white sugar in Florida I still see them...but my mind's eye takes me back to Virginia in the fall when the changes came, albeit beautiful as a youth I yearned for the carefree days of summer.

      Such an enchanting work ....

Angels are on the way to you this evening ps shared g+ pinned tweeted

Another beautifully descriptive poem Rasma. How our surroundings and the river in particular are changed by the seasons. A wonderful read.

Autumn is here, yes. Mind you, today was and still is very hot. I feel drained, as I was assisting in a 24-hr race. A medic, too. Your man Garth Brooks has done an excellent job.

Rivers are so meaningful to us. We esoteric poets understand the Consciousness, the purity ...vibrancy ..flow ... the movement of life and it's sojourn...

      Great Hub!

Autumn is a colorful beautiful season but when spring breaks in it is as if nature has opened up a treasure trove of beautiful scenery. Beautifully expressed.
