On The Road To Kingdom Come (Poem and Song)

Updated on October 27, 2016

John has been writing poetry since his school days. He was awarded "Poet of the Year 2014" Hubby Awards and has had two poems become songs.

Inspiration

The idea for this poem came to me after listening to the wonderful (according to my taste anyway) Harry Chapin song of the same name, "On The Road To Kingdom Come". The poem isn't based on the message in the song but the title was perfect for the words floating around in my head. This is the result. I hope you like it.

Update! Recently I asked Al Wordlaw (word55 to most of us here, and a very talented singer and musician) if he could turn one of my poems into a song. He said to send him a couple and he would see if he could. I did email him three of my poems and he chose this one. Below is the wonderful song that he created from this poem. Please take the time to view the video.

On The Road To Kingdom Come

I know not how he's travelling

Or exactly where he's been

But I know the 'stranger's' coming,

Like a figment in my dream.

He has been a million places,

From Rome to Timbuktu.

From the vast Sahara Desert

To the mountains of Peru.

He could sail into the harbor

On a boat with hoisted flags.

But more likely in some alley

As a vagrant dressed in rags.

There'll be no trumpets sounding

Or parade for "welcome home".

You will not recognise this man,

He'll walk the streets alone.

He may approach you humbly,

Head bowed, with beggar's cup.

"Please Sir, can you spare a dime,

So one like me may sup?"

He'll test if you are worthy,

So be generous and kind

To even homeless vagrants,

Infringing on your time.

Then, maybe if your heart is true,

When his work on Earth is done,

You'll become his fellow traveller

On the Road To Kingdom Come.

Thank you for sharing your own personal story that is a testament to how people act Marlene, and also for you kind comments in regard to the poem and music.

Our church did the same experiment with the pastor posing as a homeless man. Not a single person, including me, reached out to him. Imagine our surprise when the homeless man walked up to the podium to preach. It was a learning experience. Your poem is quite lovely and the message is one we all need to hear. By the way, the music is a wonderful accompaniment.

Thank you Michael. Yes it is an important and timeless message. I am glad my poem could convey that.

      Hi.

We can not hide from reality while facing the Truth. Your poem Jodah, echoes His prediction: you will have chance to meet my need as being hungry, thirsty, naked , hospitalized or jailed... A message is more than convincing, coming from our Creator... ( Is my doing enough?)

      Voted awesome.

      Peace.

Thank you for sharing that personal story Say Yes to Life. I too have heard of similar things happening. There are some hypocrites among churches and charities that only care about money and appearances. You need to check them out carefully I agree.

Thanks Yo! I appreciate your compliment. I was so, inspired by Jodah's (John's) great poetic message. The words already had perfect rhythm and rhyme that fit right into my music. Be blessed!

I had an experience similar to that pastor; I gave to an organization, then a few days later walked in the church looking rather scuzzy. I was rudely kicked out. I wrote them a letter telling them what I did, and got a warm letter of apology. When I called for a follow-up conversation, the leader of the "charity" answered the phone snapping, "Is this a personal problem?!" They actually had the nerve to send me several more solicitations!

The moral to this story is, check out the charity before giving your hard-earned money!

word55 - you did a fabulous job on the song!

Hello Shauna. I am glad you got to read this hub and hear the song that Al did such a great job with. Yes, it is one of my earlier poems so you would have missed it the first time. Hope the masses do get to hear it. Thanks for your kind comment.

John, I'm so glad Al pointed me to this poem. I guess you wrote it before I started following you. The message is outstanding!

Al really did this piece justice. It's a good dancing song. What better way to get the message heard (and sung) by the masses?

Kudos to you both. Great collaboration John and Al!

It sounds better every time I hear it John. Your point/message is very powerful! I'm going to rerecord it and fix line 1 with your "how" instead of the "where" that I somehow put in. You should have told me John -:). I didn't do that intentionally and after all this time, I just noticed because I reread your words, along with hearing the recording. Wow! Still, a great message that I'm happy to be a part of.

Beautiful words and thought, John. It is really nice set to music, and when I was playing it a coworker walked into my office. She is a very spiritual person, too, and thought it was very nice.
