The Secret File of The Earth(1): The Legendary Atlantis

The lost Atlantis

Mysterious Island

Besides the known five continents, is there the sixth? It has been a puzzle for a long time in Archeological and Geographical areas. Plato first mentioned the island of Atlantis in his two dialogues Timaeus and Critias, written in 360 B.C. In Timaeus, Egyptian monks told Solon, the current Greek legislator, that Atlantis used to be an island on Atlantic ocean larger than Asia and Libya together, and face up to Pillars of Hercules across a great distance. Nine thousand years ago before Solon was born, Atlantis had highly-developed civilization and economy. Atlantis people conquered Mediterranean islands, but was finally beaten by Athens and their allies. Atlantis people became to dwell in vulgar and wickedness. In the end, the ancient continent was destroyed by earthquakes and tsunami.

Legendary story

The god of ocean, Poseidon, fell in love with and married a young girl who lonely lived in an island. They had five twin sons. Later, Poseidon divided the island into ten districts, and the ten sons each ruled one. The eldest son named Atlas had the highest rank, which is why the continent was called Atlantis.

The ten rulers were all wise and strong, and their nations were all prosperous. Unfortunately, those nations were finally reduced to corruption and degradation. Then, Zeus, the Father of gods, used earthquake and tsunami to inundate the continent onto the bottom of the sea in one day and one night.

In 1870, German archeologist, Heinrich Schliemann, who discovered Troy, excavated Maycenae ruins in Peloponnesian Peninsula. Thirty years later, British archaeologist, Ebense, excavated the earlier Minoan relics in Cretan island. The two discoveries that shocked the whole world made people remember the "lost Atlantis" again.

In the late of the Middle Age, people who believed in Atlantis drew a map about its location in the Atlantic. In 1882, an American scholar, Donnelly, used knowledge in archaeology, language, race, geology, plants and animals to closely examine the map, and then put forward to a hypothesis. He reminded people that the American culture was surprisingly like Egyptian culture before Columbus found the "New World", such as the structure of pyramids, the preserving method of mummies, the calendar. He believed that the two cultures had the same derivation, while the bridge between them was the "lost Atlantis". After the Atlantis was gone, the interaction of the both continent stopped. However, naturalists have already denied Donnelly's hypothesis.

Do you believe this?

Atlantis is a mythical island nation first mentioned and described by the classical Greek philosopher Plato in the dialogues Timaeus and Critias. Alleged to be an imperial power in the ancient world, the existence of Atlantis has been debated since Plato first spoke of it. The notion of Atlantis represents different ideas to everyone: for some, it is the ultimate archaeological site waiting to be discovered, a lost source of supernatural knowledge and power, or perhaps it is nothing more than a philosophical treatise on the dangers of a civilization at the pinnacle of its power. Whether Atlantis did exist or is merely the creation of Plato may never be known. Nonetheless, the very idea of its existence continues to inspire and intrigue many people, echoing our desire to achieve or return to an age of prosperity.

In 1958, American zoologist, Dr. Velantan, in the seabed near Bahamas found some strange constructions in various great algebraic structures and hundreds of miles of straight lines. 10 years later, he at the same area found hundreds of kilometers of wall, which was built with huge stones of 16 cubic meter each, and also found several piers and bridges, which he thought were obviously relics of some lost port city. At the time, the puzzle of Atlantis arose again. Explorers in droves came to Bahamas ocean. All those stone wall and bridge piers drew imaginations and hypotheses about a lost civilization. However, all those hypotheses were overthrown soon by oceanists.

Some scholars thought from the geological changes and fossils that the rocks 2300 meters deep in the sea around the north of Azores Islands were formed in the air 17000 years ago. Scholars pointed that Azores Plateau standing in the bottom of the sea around Azores Islands used to be a continental land, and its appearance and size were close to what Plato described. In 1974, a Soviet ocean studied cruise found a lost city in the sea bottom 300 nautical mile away from the Strait of Gibraltar. Many people believed that was the lost Atlantis. In recent years, some scholars found some ruins of pyramids and buildings around Haiti and Cuba, and so believed that Atlantis located at Caribbean. Ancient Babylonia, Egyptian and some African tribes thought Atlantis at the west of them, while American Indian thought it at the east of them.

For a long time, people have been exploring, even thinking about Pacific area, or non-marine water. Mexico, North Europe, North Africa, Australia, and even China and India were all subjected to be guessed as the ruins of Atlantis. However, all these suspects have been denied by close studies.

One question

Atlantis had lost 12000 years ago, when was still in the late of Palaeolithic Age. Were there any civilizations even earlier than Egyptian, Indian, or other well-known ancient civilizations, which we called pre-historical civilization? As the theory and probably a fact that some mountains used to be taller than Mount Everest, but had weathered or even disappeared with time, there are chances that human civilizations could happen in way.

You have interesting opinions, and I never know Hollow Earth Theories before. Thanks for your knowledge. Maybe there were "beingS",as you said, but at least I believe in "Atlantis". So what? The Earth is already 5 billion years old, but only 2,000 years with this human written words. Kinda hard to believe.

The Lost City of Atlantis myth has even managed to get involved with the Hollow Earth Theories along with the Bermuda Triangle concepts, for example... So, yeah, ya dang right it is very interesting as it beckons for the imagination to fabricate new ideas towards this subject, nonetheless... Plus, it is very obvious to me and many of y'all, surely, that far more advanced beings existed on this planet long ago, for a certain period of time, of course......

Nifty, thanks for stopping by. You are right. Actually, we have good reason to believe in those highly developed pre-historical civilizations, because the Earth after all has had 5 billion years old, while human history with written words is only about 2000 years.

You know, whether Atlantis existed or not, the very idea of a lost civilization gives us (from a purely humanistic viewpoint) something to search for, to dream about, and to aspire to discover...

      Anyway, great post!

Thanks Seth, like I said and you are right only the few in Plato's inner circle will understand what he meant and if it is physical or metaphysical. Even today, those in mystery use Atlantis as the starting point of Civilization/knowledge before other places took turn. So the point is that he meant something which we are yet to figure out or which is still understood by relative few.

David is on to something, Plato was not allowed to reveal sacred ceremonies and probably walked a fine line in the analogy of the cave, or the immortality of the soul dialogues. Heraclitus was often accused of veiling his philosophy in the mysteries.

I think Atlantis was code for something that was definitely real and anyone who undertook the sacred ceremonies would have been able to understand exactly what he was talking about.

Is Atlantis connected to Hyperborea (far north)? If so then it could be England, and I saw this special on one of the educational channels called "Stone Age Atlantis" where they claimed to have found flutes and other objects from a fishing society that lived in Doggerland which is Modern UK before it was separated from the mainland when the glaciers melt. They seemed to be vastly ahead of other groups at the time, someone even said the salmon diet increased their brain functions. The reason this seems plausible to me is that it like in the legend, sank beneath the sea and is now underneath the English channel and whatever that body of water between the UK and Scandinavia is called.

I think plato must have meant something when he mentioned Atlantis. However, what we may not really know is if he meant a physical or mystical place, let us remember that plato was not in the crowd. He had a spiritual insight. Many mystics today still mention Atlantis. I think it is beyond the physical because it is possible that life still exists in Atlantis, so it is like a world under the deep ocean where some men still visit by mystical means. Those in the mystery can say more about atlantis.
