The Secret Kisser on the Boardwalk, short story

Updated on May 17, 2016

Introduction:

Beginning of story: There is a kissing bandit who begins by leading Detective Nancy Simpson, and Sergeant Harry Wilson on a library chain using the Dewey Decimal system to pick out his ‘victims’, after the police figure it out and guess the next one in the chain and he jumps off of the chain.

Instead of following in the traditional footsteps and carrying guns or knives or the kisser even being a killer of any type, this man is a gentleman to all women. He has a respect for them and does not harm anyone in any way. A respect and courtesy which has changed over the years and is rarely shown by most other men these days.

This is a real mystery to the police because they are trying to catch someone, but you might put it partially in the romantic category.

The First Kiss:

One thick and foggy night, a lovely woman with dark brown hair was standing outside of an Italian restaurant at the end of the Coney Island boardwalk. While waiting for her date she listened to the faint bells, shouts, and saw the lights from the ferris wheel. There was nobody else around where she was and she smoked cigarettes to keep warm. Right after she put one cigarette out and lit another one, soft and gentle lips touched her lips instead of the cigarette and someone kissed her a loving kiss. She just stood in a daze for a few minutes. When she came out of the ‘coma-like’ daze she looked around but saw nobody else and asked herself, “Who was that?” with a warm and happy smile. She thought it had been Sam her boyfriend surprising her.

Sam did not arrive until a few minutes later and she wondered whether he would believe her. She thought it over and decided to tell him and he just laughed and said, “Sorry that I am late honey, but you do not have to make up stories to try to make me jealous.”

She huffed and said, “I am not making it up, it really happened! Right outside the restaurant while I was waiting for you! There was no-one else around for witnesses and I did not catch a glimpse of him.”

“In your dreams”, he replied.

She realized that she could not convince him so she dropped it.

After they finished their dinner, had left the tip and paid the bill, they were walking back to his car when they passed a couple arguing named John & Violet - (two others who had just left the restaurant) - they overheard them debating about a man kissing the woman and disappearing.

Sam said, “See honey, another two. It must be something in the air tonight.” Mary said nothing.

The Boardwalk Stroll:

A few eves later they went to the boardwalk and while walking along past the rides, arcades and all of the other fun stuff on boardwalks, several times they passed couples or 2-3 girlfriends talking about a mysterious charming man on the previous night who kissed beautifully then disappeared and all that women could do for a few minutes were stand frozen while smiling. The thing was, it was not the same night that Sam & Mary had been at the restaurant. He looked at Mary and said, “I admit, perhaps you were not making up the story that night.”

“Does that mean that you finally believe me Sam?”

“I only said ‘perhaps’. I did not say that I totally believe you – yet.”

Thank you for taking this.

Detective and Sergeant at Work:

Source

The Police Step In:

A Detective by the name of Nancy Simpson – from the Bronx - and a Sergeant Harry Wilson – from downtown Chicago - (who used to be in the army together) had been trying to track this guy down for a while now. The problem was that they were not getting any assistance or description from the ‘victims’. If you could call them victims...after all they loved it - and I mean 'loved'. All that the police had been told each time was that he had not harmed them in any way and they had asked the Detective each time, “Has it happened to you yet?” When she said 'no' they answered with, “Just wait. He is so romantic and loving! After it happens you are left with this warm feeling that fills your inside which is indescribable.”

Every night the detective and sergeant would go back to the office, grab coffee, and flop down at their desks. “Another night wasted! Maybe we should give up on this guy, after all he’s not harmin’ anyone”, said Wilson.

The Detective responded with, “We just have to keep after him. Sooner or later we will start picking up clues. After all he is breaking a law.”

“Which one?” he asked.

“I do not know yet but I will let you know”, she said.

The Visit With the Captain:

It went on like that for several weeks; they just kept repeating the previous last three lines with no results. One day the Captain called them into his office and asked them why they had no results on the ‘Kissing Bandit’ case.

“You two told me that this case would be a snap and that you would have this solved in absolutely no time. Well?”, asked the Captain.

“You see, Captain, it is harder than I thought”, said Detective Nancy.

The Captain asked, “Just how much harder?”

“You see”, replied Nancy, “Every time that we think we almost have him, he slips through the laws fingers. We can never pin anything on him.”

“Hmm”, the Captain thought for a few minutes. Then he slowly responded, “Perhaps you should simply act as if you dropped this and watch him from afar, such as on the news. See if anything comes out of it and then reappear suddenly. Try to surprise him one night. Attempt to throw him off guard.”

“Okay Captain, we will definitely do that, and let you know how it works out”, she said.

The Captain said, “That is all for now, you two may get back to work. The next time that I want to see you in here is when you have good news for me.”

The Secret Kisser and the Undercover Cops

The next segment to come is titled up above and you will have to wait and find out about it.

Being 'Undercover', or, The {Im}perfect Couple

Harry and Nancy returned to their desks and began discussing how they were going to handle this. They talked to no avail for about an hour when Nancy realized that their shift had left and the next one was in.

“It is past our time to go home Harry, and we are not getting anywhere anyhow. Why not go home tonight, sleep on it for three nights, and see what fresh ideas we have when we come in on Monday.”

“That sound’s good to me”, said Harry.

He picked up his jacket and briefcase and she grabbed her sweater and shoulder bag, they each told the other to have a nice weekend and went home to think for two days and three nights.

Monday morning she asked him what he had come up with.

He answered, “All of that time and I did not come up with a thing.”

“I have an idea,” she said, “What do you say about us going to the boardwalk as a couple who is having a touchy affair.”

“That sounds interesting but suppose he notices our guns or badges?”

“Both of us will leave them in the car and he will never know.”

“Okay - count me in.”

Nancy replied, “Fine. We prepare things here for our ‘adventure’ and be on our way.”

They got ready for their 'adventure at the boardwalk'.

I am grateful that you liked it so much Faith, I was hoping that readers would get enjoyment from it. :-) It would be wonderful, I love mysteries but I hate the violence they usually have. I try to find softer ones if I can.

Thank you so much for your votes and shares! :)

You are welcome for being cheered up. I am glad that you liked it so.

I am pleased that it was fun to read John. If they ever catch him I know that nobody will complain - except the boyfriends. So I do not know any more than you what he will be charged with, which is why I did not have him caught yet. lol

Thank you for your vote. :-)

Hello again, Kevin, my thoughts are that being all the women who were kissed were spellbound by the kiss they received as it was such a sweet and gentle kiss ...no harm, no fowl. Plus, they all did not seem to be distressed but pleasantly surprised. I am thinking it was a sweet angel who knew they needed a sweet kiss at that particular moment in time. Otherwise, in reality, it could be assault if unwanted. I think this is a magical mystery story and very well done. Blessings on this Monday night.

Crisp clean writing, just like the story. Exactly what you would expect from two policemen who had been in the service together.

Good Monday morning Faith, could not stay away again, huh? LOL Hmm, interesting spin on the story if I use the angel. I have read fantasies, so I could change it it from a mystery to a fantasy. Or perhaps a romantic fantasy/mystery. A magical mystery? I guess that could still be written under a fantasy. Once again, thank you for stopping by. :)

That is strange Faith. You are telling me that every new Hub that you write and try to link to another Hub keeps coming to this one instead? I will try to go and check out a couple of them to see whether I can help. There must be a simple reason.

Friday starts the weekend. It is supposed to be a nice weekend here in GA. :-)

Well, since I am here again, due to me attempting to fix my links, I will comment ... It is most strange indeed! What I am saying is that I am working on a hub to publish. I have linked some hubs, including your's -surprise - and every other hub I have linked, when I click on that other hubbers' links, up pops this hub of yours.

The sun finally came out here today, although still so cold. We have been having terribly dreary and rainy weather for over a week. Tomorrow is supposed to be near 60 and sunny!

Hopefully, I will the kinks worked out of my links shortly.

Have a great Friday and weekend ahead ...
