The Secret Staircase - Poetry

Updated on November 23, 2012

The suitcase

Sat upon the ground,

To be found,

For inside

A staircase

That did confound

All logic.

Was a nosy kid,

For things

That people hid

From view,

They forbid

Him seeing.

Into the cellar

He did go,

The suitcase

Wanting to show

It's secrets

Billy would know

His future.

The suitcase

Brown and shabby

Tempted Billy

To look in

He saw

The staircase,

Billy's grin

Was awesome!

At last a secret

Billy owned,

Not to be

So down

The stairs

Into a world

Beneath him.

A world

Where fear and magic

And fate has proved

She can be cruel

For Billy was

Sat in a school

The teacher

A trick cast

By a ghastly ghoul

Using children as his tool

And all around Billy

Numbers fall

And words like

Cat and bat and ball

And on his stool

Billy's head

So the moral

To this tale?

Doesn't fail

To kill the cat

Or Billy's head,

When secrets kept

Can leave you

The opening photo is mesmerizing! I pictured Billy descending the stairs in the suitcase. What a vivid imagination you have, Jennifer! Good moral to the story, also.
