The Super Model

By Tony DeLorger © 2013

She walks the lonely catwalk,

her beauty like blood,

dripping from a self inflicted wound,

trails behind each pronounced step.

That smile, forced and applied,

fools no-one,

a gaunt and starved face,

revealing sacrifice and pain.

Her turn exquisite, effortless,

one hand upon her bony hip,

perfectly painted nails,

delicate long fingers.

A silent swish,

a flick of the head

and she returns to her cave,

to the chaos back stage,

each step more perfect than the last,

in a line straighter than a honed blade.

I wonder what she's thinking,

lost in this ritual death,

this display of the walking dead,

painted, coloured draped fabrics,

baubles of many, glittering,

spindly shoes of diamonds.

Again, she returns under light,

transformed, eyes blackened and lifeless,

bones clattering;

so who loves this lone beauty,

who caresses her and tells her

it will be alright,

just keep breathing,

or is she at arms length,

her beauty feared, so revered,

as to be apart from the common folk.

Each time she returns to the cave,

my heart sinks,

as her life slowly fades away,

her beauty the pallet of magicians,

her body the hanger in a closet,

cold and straight.

She will only live again when those lights beckon,

colours adorn, and that sway of the hips,

ignites imaginations.

I just hope there is a life beyond this,

a life not lost to fashion.

Let's just hope this is now a thing of the past.
