The Survivalist

The Survivalist

I am not fond of spiders
but stand far off in awe...
the direction they wish to travel
is subject to instant yaw...
and with so many magnificent legs
can, thus, outrun the best...
and so it is, I stand afar...
to observe, quite dispossessed.

Spiders are quite resourceful, though
as any arachnids go...
their craft is instinctively brilliant,
for no meal will they forgo...
they spin a web of finest silk
and lay their trap to hunt...
then withdraw into the wings,
a most amazing stunt!

They watch what ever wanders near
into their sticky webs...
then sit and wait most patiently
while victim's struggle ebbs...
and then, they will enjoy their feast,
delectable and fine...
until another bug appears
upon which they will dine.

Yes, they are most resourceful ones,
these creepy little pests...
one of Nature's finest guides,
Her own, most welcomed, guests.
I'm not so fond of spiders,
But can surely not deny...
that they are great survivalists,
a fact none can defy.

BeyondMax, Spiders fascinate and scare me all at once! I guess I have a healthy respect for the little critters! And I take no chances with any of them! Happy Mother's Day to you! and Thank you!

Awesome poem and observations, love the story about the banana monster LOL I don't favor the poisonous ones but ok with the regular ones (like Daddy Long Legs) unfortunately most of the aussie spiders are seriously dangerous guys, better not to take a chance =)

Creepy and fascinating creatures. They come in so many shapes and sizes -- all of them scary. These were fine words on the subject.

One time as we were sitting on the back steps my mother let a spider travel crawl across her rotating hands showing us they were nothing to freak out about. I never kill them if they get in the house but pick them up with a kleenex and send them on their way. My garden usually attracts the huge yellow and black garden spiders and they are amazing to watch when they catch a victim! I like the subject you picked to rhyme about!

This one made me laugh. I'm not afraid of spiders but several years ago I walked into a restroom while at a park and stepped up to the urinal, looked down and a spider the size of my fist (the body!)was sitting right in the drain of the urinal. I'm sure it would have been a great youtube video watching me bank slowly away from that urinal. All I could think about was these damn things can jump :-P Peace!! Tom

hmmm, miss_jkim...I will give this some thought....If I relay this event as it really happened, it would surely make a funny read...albeit, a bit embarrassing...thanks again!

      No_Clue,

Your story of the banana spider would make for a great hub. Write on my friend! I feel there is a world of amazement inside that chasm, spoken of by bbnx, just waiting to be shared by you.

okmom23, thank you, Kind Lady, for your read and vote! I do think spiders are as amazing as they are creepy....I got chased through my little apartment once by a huge banana spider that was up in the corner of my shower stall at 5 am in the morning....I plunged it to death in the living room with a plunger!!! What a funny site I must have been! and that spider had a span of about 4 inches toe to toe! He chased me out of the bathroom, through the kitchen, into the livingroom...dripping wet (me...not it...) True story, I swear!!!

Ode to No_Clue's very special (yet creepy) "Survivalist"

I wear a brimmed black beanie proudly claiming me as Spidie, as I fondly spin a web that others find most mighty.

They find themselves off balance as I build a world of nuance, for little do they know, their world has little substance.

It's in those little details where I trap ones unaware, for they've built their own webs most majestic, but got caught in their own fear snare.

For much like that sly dark spider who spans the chasm's reach, a life of grandest vision is beyond one's normal reach.

Hum, I can only say that this is quite a subject to write poetry about. It's different but that's what makes it good. Great job.
