The Traveling Preacher

The Traveling Preacher

A predacious preacher,
charismatic and fine,
in front of the cameras
Lord, how he could shine.
Well versed in the jargon
with Bible in hand...
he dressed to the teeth,
and revivaled the land.
He played to the needy...
the crippled and poor,
the suffering masses
who needed a cure.
He plied them with hope
where all else had failed...
promising miracles when
donations were hailed.
He traveled about
with a crew and a tent...
drumming up business
at each place that they went.
He preached to the broken,
the desperate and lost,
those that were willing
to cover his cost..
And then he would vanish
into the dark night
to count up his earnings,
with greedy delight
and scoff to himself at
how stupid the sheep
would follow him eager
to take a blind leap...
But, then came the day,
one that comes to us all,
when the sweet hand of justice
paid the preacher a call...
And the Angel of Death
with a sneer in his eye,
came to collect
with no hue or no cry...
and struck him with lightening
right dead where he fell...
and carried that preacher
to the fires of hell.

rdsparrowriter, thank you. Yes it is a sad state of affairs when those who represent God on this earth misuse their "authority", and it happens alot, I am afraid. I appreciate your visit and great comment!

It's very true and great poem, but it's very sad to hear that how people insult God by cheating and lying. It's very brave of you to stand up for what is right. God bless you!

Great poem and you, guys, are my heroes! It takes guts to expose these crimes, especially when it involves preachers... I'm glad your mom got her hard earned money back, it's just so inhuman to use people and cheat them out of their money using God's name...

No clue, there are so many TV channels on which these men feature, and it is a disgrace that they get to live on poor peoples hops and dreams. I am glad your preacher went to the other door, where they all belong. x Great hub, voted up and awesome.

Norma, thank you for your visit and thoughtful comment. I so agree with you, it must be most grieving to God...and it is interesting, your observation concerning the top photo, because I chose that one, in particular, because of the resemblance it bears to the man who tried to cheat my mom...again, thank you!

I agree that some preachers take advantage of others to line their own pockets and, as disgraceful as it is to us, how much more so is it to God?

It's a shame because, in reality, I know some super pastors who would never dream of committing such actions yet, because of their profession, they fall under scrutiny.

The drawing to the top right of your hub reminds me of one television evangelist. I won't state any names but, in all honesty, I haven't watched a preacher on television for a long time.

So truthful. This article should be printed out and placed by a few pastor's Rolls Royce, Cadillacs or Bentleys. Most of them got their prize possession off the poor, sick and elderly.

BrightMeadow, thank you. As I stated in a comment above, it is a partially true write about my mom, who has been on my mind, because her birthday would have been April 24...when she is on my mind, she finds her way into my writing...smile. I appreciate your visit and comment! Have a great Easter!

Fossillady, thank you for your read and thoughtful comment...I don't know that its so much a matter of people being blind, as it is certain individuals being slick at using people's desperation to manipulate those who trust in the fact that they purport to represent God, but, in reality have hidden agendas and fall prey to greed. My mom was not a blind woman, but she trusted that this man was who he represented himself to be...a man of God, when in fact, he was a greedy man who lacked integrity. I do not negate all preachers, by any stretch, but some of the finest television evangelists who got fat on the dollar of their faithful, have been found lacking in the "godly" department. It bares caution...they are, after all, all of them human...

I am sorry...got on my soapbox on that one...my mom was not a woman to stand up for herself, and was willing to turn the other cheek on this one but we, her children would have none of it. We took it to the press and got her money back and hopefully opened a few eyes in the process.

A familiar story these days, too bad, but there are so many more good ones! I never understood how people could be so blind! Thank you for sharing

Spirit Whisperer, thank you! I will see if I can find A Leap of Faith, I believe I have seen it but its been years. No one, not even preachers, are immune to greed...but to prey upon the needy is what I call an abomination...My mom was on my mind yesterday and voila! This happened! smile...thank you for your solid support! Hugs!

attemptedhumour, there is a story behind this little feisty piece...that involved a popular television evangelist and my mom, who spent an entire year saving to go to Israel with this man and his group. 13 Days before they were scheduled to leave, she found out her cancer was out of remission and she couldn't go. When she tried to contact this predacious preacher to get a refund, after 5 weeks of avoided phone calls she was told by him that her money was already spent! (about $3000)...Long story short, we took it to a local news station action reporter, who interviewed her and contacted him. The day before the scheduled broadcast, she got a call from that preacher begging her to cancel, that he would pay her back in installments...well it broadcasted as planned and within a week she got a check in full...this one is dedicated to my mom, God rest her soul, all others who misplace their trust in predacious preachers and get taken!

It's amasing how gullible some people can be, it would be nice to think that these parasites get their cum uppence, but alas they usually drive a cadillac off into the night to an expensive hotel with six mistresses. I love this poem and feisty writing must be catching. Cheers
