The Travesty of Youth

By Tony DeLorger © 2011

I do lament my early days,

of wasted dreams and childish ways,

embarked on visionary glimpses found,

of life’s secrets and insights profound.

In a mind so raw and green in skill,

a travesty of a journey ill,

from too much knowledge and no control,

I stumbled in life open and bold.

For understanding needs cure first,

a mellowing soul to absorb the thirst,

of life’s realities and the will of mind,

to make honest choices and in faith decide.

It is youth that pushes life to the brink,

knowing all and then assuming, think,

that sight is a gift of eyes alone,

not of the mind and the soul atoned.

Had I the head that fits me now,

such joy I’d find in youth allow,

the knowledge of a learned mind,

atop a body all smooth and primed.

But dream I do of opportunities lost,

to youthful arrogance come at a cost,

from learning life through stumbled steps,

of bruised egos and hearts bereft.

Now in age all mellowed and sound,

that body smooth has gone to ground,

left me wanting in many ways,

but mind attuned my saving grace.

Happy Birthday me!

Thanks rjsadowski, glad you enjoyed it. I've had five kids and its obvious parenting never stops. I certainly don't know it all, but when I was young I used to think so. So easy to see in retrospect.

Great poem as usual. My daughter is 21 and she knows it all. I hope that someday she will realize how little any of us really know. We can all use some help.
