The Tricks She Played

Updated on August 18, 2013

The tricks she’d play

Always made him smile

They were high school sweethearts

And he never cared

That she was leading him on

Life was good

Being together

Perhaps just for a brief time

They all thought she was so cute

And he kept on loving her

But high school ends

And teens grow up

He just drifted into a relationship

And was glad she was by his side

Never stopping to think if she was still playing

The games he had thought were so cute

Just when he was ready to make it forever

She played her last trick

And one day she was just gone

Alone and in despair

He vowed to find her

This was one trick too many

And he no longer found it funny

Days drifted by

And they became years

Women came and women went

But there was no one

No one like the woman he missed

Then one day he saw her

A little careworn

A lot sadder

Than the last time he’d seen her

And he went on over

To say that he still cared

She smiled a bit sadly

And told him that tricks

Were no longer part of her plan

They drifted together easily enough

But time had done its share

He no longer felt comfortable

He no longer really knew who she was

She looked at him wearily

And swore that she did care

But late in the dark lonely night

The bed seemed to have a river

Between them that they couldn’t ford

They had spent so much time

Her tricking him

And he not really caring

Their youth had flown so quickly

And they weren’t prepared for grown-up love

Now she wasn’t sure of him

And he wondered if he could trust

And somehow between the worrying

And all the other stuff

Love had taken second place

Two people who had to learn

To love all over again

And when they finally managed to ford that river

Like two drowning people

They clung to one another

Wondering what the future would bring

      Hi GRL,

The guy in your wonderfully written verse must be madder than hell, for her having wasted the best part of both of their lives - what a b!t*h lol!

....and you can't go wrong with a dose of Springsteen. Many clicks, and sharing, for a really well-constructed narrative, that could easily happen, or have happened in reality.

Best Wishes for a healthy and wealthy week.

      Yours Sincerely,

      Romeo's Quill

A bittersweet tale which was well woven.

I really liked the river analogy, it worked well.

I enjoyed the story, and glad they got back together on a more equal footing, but I wish you had expanded on the tricks - what they were, and what she was trying to achieve.......do you think they might work for me too??

Nicely written poem and voted up

So much wasted time before they were grown enough to appreciate love. You write such interesting narratives and the imagery created by your words is outstanding.
