The Umbrella in the Doorway (Poetry by GalaxyRat)
The Umbrella in the Doorway
He's late, it's raining out,
The job interview is all he's been worrying about,
He barely got enough sleep last night,
He kept reading by the light.
His son offered him his umbrella,
He said, "I'll be able to deal without it, little fella,"
and he stepped out the door.
In the car, driving, he kept wishing for more,
the paycheck for this new job wasn't high,
He kept on watching the raindrops and sighed.
His jacket got soaked,
He felt as if he was carrying a cloak,
But he only cared for getting to that interview,
Even though his family would have to move.
He was running flat across the street,
And his fellows thought he was a freak.
"What, the guy came without an umbrella,"
said the snickering fellas.
He got the job, he was walking to his car,
When a huge storm poured in, oh boy, was it large,
He wasn't so lucky, and as lightning flashed in,
It hit exactly where the umbrella would've been,
but, he left the umbrella home, in the doorway,
when it could've saved his life, but where he let it stay.
