"The Unit" by Eric Wayne Flynn

Updated on September 2, 2015

"The Unit"

In measurements of one

Assessing life as such

This perspective

This isolation

In this unit of one

Under assault

Challenged by the many

Numbers, ready to tear us apart

We be blood

We be brethren

Subjected to more and more

The miscellaneous

The detractors

The disarray

In this unit of one

This bullseye

This central figure

Now, multiplied through and through

This breakdown

This division

This rift

In this unit of one

Testify as a challenge, more or less a quest

For in one it take conviction

Balance with thee selves

Virtue is value, how to determine wealth

And then, thee be rich

And then, thee be just

And then, thee shall be, family

Thanks Melissa, you absolutely interpreted it the way I intended; it is a layered onion. Thank you for the kind words and understanding.

This is a very powerful poem. I don't know if you meant it to be open for interpretation, and I hope my interpretation of it will be at least half-way correct. I think what I felt and read in this poem was a deep longing for unity, to finally not be alone in a fight we all face, which is life. However, we have to be an army of one until that happens.

Really thought provoking for me, and I love that type of poetry. :)

Thanks Jodah, I hope you had a great anniversary (sans hangover). I believe we all know the answers, it just all comes down to the individual, if everyone self governed themselves as a good and just state we would be a better community; then there comes the interpretation of "good" and "just" and we fall apart and separate in that confusing process.

this cuts through me like a knife Eric. Sometimes I feel like I am alone against the world. They just don't seem to see it, while everything is so clear to me. Ask me, I know the answers. But no one cares, they just keep doing their thing, destroying society and the world. Ouch!! just fell off my soap box. Excuse me, it's my anniversary an I have just drunk a bottle of wine. Sometimes everything is much clearer then. Good poem.
