The Use of Poetry

Updated on February 24, 2012

I wrote her a poem, so happy was she

she swooned when i read it to her

and then she fell in love with me

My words were so hypnotic, seduced was she

I soon realized she wasn't in love with me

I had fooled myself, she just loved my poetry

I thought that I was in love.

she loved the words that I wrote

she left my love floating, just like a boat

on an ocean of emotion,

there it still floats.

Now my words have no meaning

I am empty and spent

I try and try to find the words

I don't know where they have went...

So the next time you write,

a fine woman poetry

don't show her your heart

or you'll end up like me.

A great way to express emotions, but don't give up - you'll find the right love one of these days.

I loved the imagery used here of your love as a boat floating on an ocean of emotion. This a very beautiful poem of raw honesty. It is strange how one's poetry defines us and at the same time, it is only another aspect of us; one that should be harbored gently.

You've helped me realize this myself and I remember a time when I shared a written story with friends and they loved the characters (but understood them wrong) and talked about wanting to read more for the wrong reasons- I felt utterly used and hurt.

Guess we should all lock our hearts safe and the people who truly love us will see it anyways.
