The wolf trapper .............imagine

Updated on May 11, 2014

The rider reached around behind him and threw
down the upturned calf hide
slid slowly down off the side of the
horse and stood warily
on the hide
reaching down with a stick
he hooked the # 2 and1/2 sized
wolf trap from the dirt
picking it up to
eye lever he

He spoke to the other rider on his horse
"the son of a bitch did it to us again
the wolf sprung the trap without
even thinking about it"
he looked down at the big
males track in the dirt
as if the wolf planned it
just to say
"you will never get me "

The other rider spoke softly and said
"Well looky -yonder I'll be damned to hell ! "
As they both watched
off in the distant near
a wind blow downed dog-wood tree
the big male wolf stood
directly facing them
not moving a muscle

" Don't got yer' rifle with you do you , Seb?"
"Nope "
They both stood and watched the wolf
standing just outside of hand-gun range
not moving an inch
Eye to eye
soul to soul the
trapper and the wolf
communicated in silence
The trapper
"Its just a matter of time "
And the wolf
"I know that , but it won't be
by you "

And then in no time at all they were all gone
the wolves and the trappers too
gone from the river bottoms
from the prairie towns
from the lost little
and canyons
the mesa's
the watering holes
for almost a hundred years
there were no howls
of loneliness in
the night

Yet in the last twenty years or so
they were returned as it were
borrowed really from across the border
Canada now they are once again
living in the high
rocky mountains Montana
maybe Oregon
they have returned
and so too the howls
the young
the females

So to , have the trappers........

Grew up with the boys. We just have to compensate cattle ranchers and it is not that much money. Flagstaff is having an Alpha pack spring.
