This is Nigeria: A POEM

Updated on June 3, 2014

This is Nigeria : A POEM

Tell them
I lived in the days of Achebe;
The man of many words
One whose embers shone with brilliant rays
Shooting words in unison
Like the splash of a million stars
Tell them

Let them know
That Soyinka the great Poet spoke
His words sounded like a million waves
People heard, some laughed;
Others called him names
It was a war of words
He said of many thrushes
Spoke of lost causes
The battle and death of conscience
We listened; laughed and cried
It was compelling

The evil ruined our land
Our leaders followed their pockets
We felt we were in trance
A history of failure climbed us
Those who knew spoke
But no one listened
As the slayers nailed us
Like water, blood spilled
They bombed, maimed and slaughtered our people
But harm came not to the slayers
Oh! I smell blood

Even Chimamanda saw it
She too blew the trumpet
The sound of disgust followed
And packed our ears
Pray, tell, where is God?

Do you remember Fela?
The man of craze!
The greatest singer with open mind
He fore told of our downfall
The fate of our people he sung in dirges
Danced under the praise of the guitars
Pinned in the water of pain
His time played out!

Oh my time is now!
Remember Femi-fayode
He spoke; he belled
Praise the politicians!
Tell them they shamed us
Light fingered clowns

Our forefathers sinned
United us in dis-unity
Tell them of our new found faith
Our sorrows in union
The sacrilege they cooked
Man-made madness
The white men fooled us
All of us
This is Nigeria...

If you lived through all of that then I feel sorry for you, and all the people. As she said above it was amazing. I voted it up.
