Three European Poems

Softly Flows the Loire

Swirls of current

gently rise to the surface

of the Loire looking like

layers of very thin ice

making their way from

chateau to chateau as

the river softly flows

in its own frozen time

blending ancient moments

with those of our own.

Val d'Alvaux

We camp beneath a tower

built thirteen hundred years ago

out of stone quarried from

across the stream surrounded

not by fierce and shouting enemies

but by dark woods with blackberries

and a bald brown cliff rising

as high as this tower of defense

against raiding Saracens, but

now a peaceful sky, peppered

with stars, shines perhaps as it

did in the days of brave Roland.

*This tower is in eastern Belgium.

Hermitage of Saint Francis

Among the pines and cedars

far above the walls of Assisi,

Saint Francis preaches always

to the birds of the forest

telling them they are his

very brothers and sisters

created by Him who made

the rolling hills of Umbria

and the rivers that flow

to the sea and the seas

that flow into the oceans

and the distant lands beyond.

But right here on this

high mountain called Subasio

there is world enough for

any spirit in all of creation.

Have you ever been to Assissi, Italy

Your poems provoke a slight headrush with the imagery and breathless pacing. Nicely done.

Richard, well you've taken us on another dream trip. I want to visit the 'high mountain called Subasio.' I love St. Francis and would love to visit Assisi.
