Free Form Prose Poetry

This poem breaks away from my usual rhyming poetry. It's my attempt at free form, prose poetry. I just needed to challenge myself and try to expand my repertoire. The result was quite satisfying, though my wife finds this poem quite disturbing and says she is at a loss to where or why my mind ventures to the places it does.

I have been trying to come up with a new micro-poem, but so far an idea is eluding me, instead this is what flowed from my pen. I hope you enjoy "Through This Mirror."

Through This Mirror

Through this mirror

I could fall, crashing,

Like Alice into Wonderland.

Escape this life of apathy,

Replace reality by fantasy.

Am I brave enough

To smash the glass,

Not knowing what awaits.

White rabbit, Queen of Hearts,

A grinning Cheshire cat perhaps?

Presiding over a tea party

The Mad Hatter sits,

"Cream or sugar?" He asks,

"Or burnt offerings, you may prefer?"

Maybe a rainbow colored world

With streets paved with gold,

Or a dark desolate place

Where death and suffering abound.

A land where war rages,

Where greed and hatred rule.

Is the gambler in me

Willing to chance my hand,

Forgo everything I am and know?

"Break the looking glass,

I dare you!"

I think your attempt for the free form is really successful and also I think that matches the topis of the poem perfectly cause fantasy is free. Also I think that we all could live a fantasy if we wish but many of us just pretend that their wish is honest. I think it is a remarkable poem, Jodah.

I happen to love free form, and I love it when a writer stretches out and tries new forms of expression, so well done my friend.

You are so right Nikki, I do need to risk it more often and challenge myself. Just putting my poetry and writing on HP for others to see was a big step for me. But well done, you really saw what was behind this poem... My own insecurities.

I really liked your poem. I loved the imagery and the whole unsettling feeling it evokes.

It sounds almost metaphorical, it is really interesting and such a great last stanza.

Thank you for your insightful comments Anna. I agree it may be a little unsettling. It is about challenging yourself, risking the safety you know in the hope that the unknown may be better and more exciting. Glad you particularly like the last stanza.

On reading this I can see that you have broken the boundaries and let your voice tell the story in your mind. We all want to smash the glass of our own mirrors from time to time and each wonderland is unique to every individual. Sometimes its other people, relationships we have that make us face the mirrors of our souls. This is an excellent piece of writing and I look forward to reading more of your work. Voted up and awesome

All of the above hubbers comments have already expressed what I had been thinking and meaning to write.

It is really beautiful and passionate.

I for one, personally sense a 'realistic fantasy' in this poem, something we all struggle within ourselves, a battle we often fail to understand.

It really is eye opening. Thank you for writing this beautiful poem. I loved it.
