To Remain Silent

Updated on July 21, 2012

All his thoughts ran flat,

to remain silent,

he had that right,

and he was advised that,

but he kept thinking about it all night,

locked up,

in the land of the free,

he faces felony murder,

in the first degree,

chewing his nails

right off his finger tips,

a small, wavering sound

of protest passed his lips,

the fear was clear,

as he pissed in the chair,

as for the homicide unit,

he was in the right place,

and it was a slam dunk case,

bloody knife found

in a back seat of a taxi-cab,

prints matched as it came

from the crime lab,

the blood on his high tops,

matched the blood at the crime scene,

it was a prosecutor’s dream,

he sensed the doom,

as they produced three witnesses,

who were sitting in the next room,

he fought back the tears,

first degree murder,

how many years,

he’ll do some serious time,

but the sad thing about all this,

was that he never committed the crime.

The ultimate nightmare scenario..you put the story together skilfully in your poetic style....and then..Wham...the awful reality of the situation. A circumstance that is ripe for encouraging philosophical debate, particularly on such matters as the credibility of the death penalty.....poetry that makes you think...nothing better..good job Frank:)

A very touching poem. Indian jails are filled with so called criminals who never committed any crime and I am sure same must be case all over the world. Problem is every police station want to show that their area has minimum crime rate and if any crime is committed they have solved who did it. In doing so they many a times just don't apply brain and catch the first guy they have their eyes set on and a little evidence is enough for them to close the case.

Great poem. Too bad this has happened so many times to innocent men and women. I just read a novel, "Gone Girl", where a wife disappears and frames her husband for her murder. Amazing that these things can happen. Really tightly wound and worded poem.

This has happened to many people. Only a few months ago a man here in our state was released after being incarcerated 18 years. DNA evidence proved him innocent. Thanks Frank for a wonderful write that opens hearts and eyes to the fact that all is not black and white.
