To my students - a poem

To my Students

This poem is dedicated to my students over a thirty year teaching career. This is about YOU whether I had you as a student in Cuyahoga Falls, overseas, or in Canton. Teaching and learning is never a one way street, but it is definitely an important street to travel on. No matter which direction you are traveling, it is important to observe the traffic signs and signals. It is also a good idea to follow the speed limits. This way, you will arrive at your final destination without mishap.

Ode To My Students

Teaching me as much

as I taught you;

Inspirations and each

a candle with a flame;

Lighting the path for me

and one another;

You always had my back

and I yours;

Laughter, tears, and smiles

each day a forge onto a new path;

Along the path, whether here or abroad

finding our way;

Forever united in our quest for

knowledge and acceptance;

Knowing, trusting one another

hands held together for strength;

Now in the world

safe and secure;

At life's door

Hard won knowledge.

    phdast7: So glad you enjoyed this poem. Yes, thirty years is a long time but it was very rewarding. I started young - right out of college, so I had a few years on you. But, I admire you so much for teaching at the college level - something I have never done. I taugh high school and we tried our darndest to get them ready for university. My students and I always learned from each other! lol Never a dull moment in my classroom! Thanks so much for reading this and for your comments as they are appreciated!

    A wonderful poem and a gracious tribute to all your many students. I know I would have liked being one of those students ad learned a great deal about the world and about myself under your tutelage.

    And thirty years! I am two years shy of twenty years, bit I was a late started and didn't enter the classroom as a teacher until 1994. I have loved every day of it...administration and committee work and grading...not so much, but the students and the classroom was a perfect fit for me. :)

    Alastar: How sweet! You would have been a fun student to have, but one that would have kept me on my toes! lol. I really learned so much from my students, about them, about life and about myself. I had a great bunch of kids over the years and very, very, fond memories. I am very fortunte indeed. Thanks for stopping by to read this and for your sweet comments - greatly appreciated!

    Said it before and will say it again- really, truly, really wish I'd had you for a teacher suzettenaples. It's the rare ones like you that can make all the difference. Wonderful tribute ode!

    So you are a teacher also! You can relate to this, too. lol. You really taught some rough ones, but good for you. I taught for eleven years in an inner city school and I learned how the other half lived. What an education! I really treasure my teaching years, but I'm glad to be retired now. Thanks so much for reading this and for your comments. They are greatly appreciated!

    I taught vocational classes for SED adolescents for ten years. Give me a crew of those wild boys, and I will rebuild the world. You learn more when you teach.

    Great poem. I will be your student today.

    Thank you so much billy. I love the word ...almost lol. I know what you mean!

    Well, I had a eureka moment or ephiphany( whatever you want to call it) today, and I realized some things my students did for me during my career. So, I had to come right home and write this ode to them. It is funny how student/teacher relationships go and sometimes the students that gave me the hardest time were the ones I treasured the most. We really do learn much from our students. Thanks so much for stopping by to read this and the comments. I know you can relate! It is greatly appreciated!

    A beautiful tribute to your students, speaking of bonds formed and trust established. Made me almost wish I was back in the classroom....almost. :)

    Great job my friend, and thank you for all those years of dedicated service.
