Torn Hawaiian Shirt

Updated on September 6, 2013

Torn Hawaiian shirt,

on the floor by the bed,

half covering a dirty grass skirt,

that past dead,

sitting in a Psychiatric facility,

her tired eyes red,

a mane of stringy gray hair

cascaded down to her shoulders,

and a clump of it covered her left ear,

as her time ticked but failed to tock

she reached for a cigarette

from a metal antique box,

her face showed no emotion,

wrinkled, and hard as a rock,

and sometimes she’d hear the ocean,

but that past was trapped in her mind and locked,

life and death’s relationship was platonic,

they complimented one another,

but she was catatonic,

and she had no other,

the neurologist was certain,

the fire’s excessive heat

brought on the condition,

the honey-moon played in her mind,

then would repeat,

nothing was the same,

she managed to escape the murdering flame,

one that her new husband couldn’t tame,

death simply didn’t want her,

but she was willing to take her turn,

as she stood helplessly,

reliving the past as her husband would burn,

and burn, and burn...

Ha Ha Ha That's why I sent you that picture .

      It wasn't her turn

      but her husband

But the nightmare would live on and sometimes that's the worst torment.

Nicely captured , you are on a beautiful roll .

      That's what ut's all about.

      Bless brethren..

I will do one of your style one day.

I think you will make a good dark-image writer because you can string together fact with fiction and captivate.. try it :)

This is a fabulous and haunting poem! I think you have created a vivid picture and emotion with your words about how trauma affects us and our minds. It can be so bad that we do just shut off and basically wait for death to finally come calling.

Voted up + awesome + bookmarked as a favourite!!!

Yikes, the poor dear. Very vivid description of the long long hurt a person sometimes has to live with.

A very descriptive work. I feel certain that I would apprediate it even more if I knew what inspired you to write it. Sometimes, the poet is more interesting than the poem.

LOL... I was getting excited when I read torn hawaiian shirt torn by the bed thinking it was a hot guy until the half dirty grass skirt part. The poem sounds funny, but on a serious note, the poor woman probably never felt loved or needed by anyone. Her new husband couldn't tame the flame. hahahhaha. you painted a very good picture here. I was able to visualize all the little details.
