Trapped - A Poem

Updated on March 6, 2013
Source

It's like being wrapped in a thick wool blanket

That has been soaked in a tub of water overnight

Then wrapped in another, and another, and another

Arms trapped, legs trapped, barely able to breathe

Blankets secured with straps, pulled tight like a corset

It's like a scalpel slicing through your scalp

Prying apart the flesh to let the snake inside

The snake wraps itself around your brain

Knotting its endless body over and over again

So many knots you'll never undo them

If you ever get out of the blankets

Torturous slithering of the snake

It sinks its fangs into your brain

The venom burns through tissue, turning bone into ash

Paralyzing possibility, strangling spirit

When madness copulates with despair

Using compulsion as a lubricant

It breeds a demon that destroys from the inside out

If only you had breath enough to scream and let the pain escape

It's a seriously good poem. Will you submit it for publication or poetry competitions? It's a winner because of it's dramatic emotional power. Strong, painful, identifiable.

To be Honest, I really didn't get what the poem is all about. Will you please bother to explain. It's too complicated (for me) to understand.

      thecrazzykylex,

I appreciate you reading and caring enough to want to understand the poem. The thing about poetry is, it means different things to different people. Obviously, as the writer, it has a specific meaning to me. But I think it would diminish the impact of the poem to provide too many details on that. I have to say I'm flattered that you found it complicated - I'm not experienced in writing poetry at all, so I worry that my work is a bit pedestrian. But I'm doing it for the sake of expression more so than anything else. Thanks for reading!

GoodLady, Wow thank you, I've never considered entering a competition, as I have very, very little experience writing poetry. But coming from you, I take that suggestion as a very high compliment!

What does it mean to you? You can't go wrong answering that question.

Well my dear, you could be writing about so many things, but the fact is that the feelings you described have been felt by most of us at one time or another. The source of those feelings really isn't important, is it? It's about the human connection, the fact that most of us feel the same things throughout our lives.

Pedestrian this is not; what it is is a beautiful expression of the human experience.

Stop by tomorrow for my hub; there is a rumor that you are in it. :)

      your friend,

      bill

      Billy,

What an inspiration it is to know that you have felt these things and that you have found a way of living that is better. You inspire many with your positive hubs. And the funny ones are great too!

Am I really in your next hub? AAGH! Be gentle - I break easy.
