Uneven Exchange by S.K. Derban

Alexandra Callet's life has always run hot and cold; she is 33 years old and own a beautiful home while owning a successful interior design company. Alexandra Callet has been in love with her partner in her interior design company, but it seems he does not know it. Alexandra Callet slips away to Mexico hoping a vacation will ease the void in her heart.

Jake Taylor is secretly in love with Alexandra Callet, but his fear of destroying their partnership keeps him silent. While in Mexico Alexandra Callet is recruited by the DEA for a secret mission because she looks like a member of an assassin's family. As the DEA's training begins to take its toll Alexandra Callet's life begins to suffer and fall apart. Will Jake Taylor take his chance with Alexandra Callet. Or will they remain alone forever?

The few pages had me thinking this book was going to be a wash. It was a classic girl wants boy and boy wants girl, but both are too worried about ruining their friendship to tell the other. Then a pair of DEA agents spots our main female character and the romance and drama get pushed back a bit. Now make no mistake the drama and the romance are still important parts of the story line, but there is also a suspense and action element added in that takes center stage for this book. I personally likes this approach as I prefer books with a real action plot with a bit of romance twisted in for flare. This book delivers on both perfectly. The author was able to balance the romance with the action on an even scale.

The characters were all well written. I liked how none of the main characters fit into any sort of perfect stereo type. They all all had their own problems and was their problems and struggles that made them all seem so realistic.

I greatly enjoyed reading this book and I hope that the author continues to write more action romance novels.

Interview with S.K. Derban, author of Uneven Exchange

When you were creating your two main characters did you base them off of anyone?

My characters are all from my imagination. It is funny when family and friends suspect I wrote about them. It is all make believe!

Do you have a favorite character in your book?

Kathryn is one of my favorites even though her part is small. I love her British accent! Plus, she is so organized.

What influenced you to create this type of storyline?

San Diego is a border town, and the local news often features reports about drug smuggling in Mexico, and other DEA related incidents. An idea popped into my head, and the storyline just started to grow.

Have you ever worked with the DEA?

Not directly. After developing my plot, I met with a wonderful DEA agent who took his valuable time to answer my many questions.

Have you ever been to Mexico?

Yes, many times. We have spent time in Guadalajara, Cancun, Cozumel and Los Cabos.

Did anyone help you create the plot line or inspire it?

No. This one came just from me.
