Unexpressed Gratitude

Updated on May 20, 2013
I did not make or take this photo. I found it online. The quote on the bottom is also something I found online.
I did not make or take this photo. I found it online. The quote on the bottom is also something I found online.

“He had the hands of a healer as well as the arms of a warrior.”

You pick me up,

Carry me to safety,

Cauterize my wound,

And nurse me back to health.

Then you question me at gun-point.

Who I am?

Why I am here?

You search for deceit in my answers.

Some would grow irritated.

I do not.

I answer without delay

And without offense.

Because you are a U.S. soldier

And I am a U.S. citizen.

You risk it all for me.

I am thankful for your caution.

But then caution isn’t always enough.

There are others like you.

They came home

But you, you were brought home.

With tears of sorrow we watch,

Drowning in unexpressed gratitude.

I am grateful for your sacrifice.

I am grateful for your life.
