WHAT HIDES PANDORA`S BOX

Here are some fragments from Greek mythology which iconography has entered into wider use and become an integral part of our speech and expression.It gives a little bit of mistery and poetic to a daily life.It`s good to know what hides Pandora's box, and what lies behind the Sphinx riddle.

1. Fires of Prometheus

Prometheus was a Titan and he loved people.He stole fire from Olympus, wanting to make life easier. Zeus didn`t like that and Prometheus was chained to Mount Caucasus. He was hanging chained for years, and the eagle came every morning to peck his liver , which has been restored overnight. Heracles freed him from terrible suffering .

2. PANDORA'S BOX

Zeus punished the human race because people have gotten the fire and became powerful. He ordered Hephaestus to make the beautiful girl from soil and water and other gods endowed her with gifts (Pandora means "endowed with all gifts" ). Pandora's got a box that was not allowed to open. When Hermes brought her to the ground,Epimetheus, brother of Prometheus, fell in love with her . He didn`t follow advice not to marry Pandora.Out of curiosity Pandora lifted the lid of the box and all possible evil, trouble, diseases flew out of it. Pandora quickly closed the box, but it was too late. However, the hope remained at the bottom.

3. Apple of discord

All the gods and goddesses were invited to the wedding of mortal Peleus and the sea nymph Thetis, except Eris, the goddess of strife. She herself came to the wedding and threw a golden apple with a label "for the most beautiful!" in front of Hera, Athena and Aphrodite. Godesess had quarreled because each of them thought that she really deserves it.

4. Paris' COURT

Goddesses were not able to agree who of them deserves the golden apple, so they went to Zeus. He sent them to the mountain Ida, where the shepherd Paris, not even knowing that he is the son of the Trojan king Priam, kept the king`s flock. Paris was indecisive, because all three godesses were beautiful. Each of them offered him a reward If he chooses just her, to give the golden apple. Hera offered him power over all Asia, Athena, and the glory of victory in any war, and Aphrodite the most beautiful woman in the world. Shepherd was awarded an apple Aphrodite.

5.Scylla and Charybdis

They were sea monsters that destroyed ships. Scylla was a dangerous precipice on which ships were smashed. She had six heads on long necks and twelve claws that clutched the sailors.Charybdis was a dangerous whirlpool that ships could be avoided only while it was sleeping, and it pulled and threw the water, three times a day .

6.Sphinx MYSTERY

Sphinx is a monster with woman's head, lion's body and bird wings. She lived on the mountain near Thebes and she posed a riddle ,that she learned from the Muses ,to the passengers : "Who in the morning goes on four legs,at noon on two, and in the evening on three?" All the people who did not know the answer were devoured by the Sphinx. Oedipus solved the riddle.He said: "This is a man" and the Sphinx threw herself off a cliff.

7.HIMERA

She was a sister of Cerberus. She is the combination of a lion, wild goats and snake with dragon head. She had a giant's strength and she was spitting fire. Belerofont killed her with stick , approaching her on the winged horse Pegasus.
