War and Poverty

Updated on February 16, 2012

Juneteenth southern slaves set free

Rewarded for toil with poverty

A century of brutal reality

Proceeds a king’s sweet dream

Chains of servitude became chain gangs

Plantations transition into penitentiaries

Wealth redistribution missed the children

Free men struggle for education

Many scores beyond civil war

“Whites Only” signs are invisible

We celebrate slim privileges

Award few much and many none

Overseers wear uniforms

Lynch us in courtrooms

Runaways catch support cases

Carry around freedom papers

..

A meager 3/5 compromise replaced

By the vote-less and voiceless

Forced to make poor choices

Due to lack of equal opportunity

..

Listening skies reject our cries

We spearhead negative social trends

Disease, poverty, pregnancy, orientation

A people without men can’t build a nation

Nor withstand the whiles of the world

Without the foundation of religion

A forty acre prison filled to the brim

With children of war and poverty

Yo dude! That didn't read like a poem. That read like a spoken word poetry! Great message and nice flow with the words! Much Love and Respect.

Thank you primpo! We have an opportunity for change so all is not lost. Keep your head up ma'am. The ability to feel pain means we're alive!

Nice Hub. It sickens me that the world is still like this. People are so shallow minded and still just on automatic pilot. They don't think, for themselves, for the future of their children or the present. It gets me so angry the things that I see, the prejudice, even in the town where I live. I hate it.. I like your writing, keep going.. awsome voting up
