Water Harvest by Eric Diehl- A Novel Review

Updated on August 17, 2014

Water Harvest

For those who have a passion for high quality science fiction, author Eric Diehl brings to the reading world a work of exquisite quality in his novel, Water Harvest.

Those who know excellent science fiction recognize that the finer sci-fi is comprised of more than the classic, futuristic and high-tech realm of such stories replete with spacecraft, robots and photon torpedoes. Instead, the bar is high enough to demand in-depth stories, rich and complex characters, and a created reality harboring more than mere technology. Rather, today's demanding reader wants to feel what's going on.

The demanding sci-fi reader of today wants story, drama, creativity, and a drop of the flood gates within the mind of the writer. Rest assured, as Eric Diehl has brought us a story truly of epic proportions. Diehl clearly demonstrates a love and passion for the genre, but also successfully blends sci-fi and fantasy along with tremendous suspense by bringing the intelligent reader a story spiced with a Tolkienesqe flair combined with a complexity reminiscent of the finer Lucas.

Our main character is a vibrant young man named Cairn, who is an heir to the throne of the House of Alar, which is among several Houses in rule on this futuristic world fighting for water resources. There are those on the planet as well as Houses within the lunar colonies, all struggling to maintain what resources remain. Because of excessive resource depletion over time, desperation occurs, inevitably leading to war as well as a disconnect with those from the colonies, brethren once upon a time.

Before the serious drama occurs, Diehl takes his time to introduce the reader to this world, where we find Cairn and his people, the woman he loves, and the reality of the situation around him.

As a tribute to Diehl's ability as a writer, he didn't settle with a straightforward future, but brought us to something including grand magic, as well. This story includes a mysterious group of wizards utilizing psychedelic drugs heightening them to a greater state of awareness and ability.

The Maesters of the Viizar had plans entirely of their own. After developing an amazing level of ability while trapped in limited confines, they discover incredible potential on the planet at war. So, while the Houses seeking ultimate rule seek little more than resource and its influence, some among the Viizar prepare other agendas.

But then, there are those who can assist our heroes even in ways hitherto never imagined by any of them, through ways only the mind of Eric Diehl could conjure. Ay, Cairn learns much and learns well from those once lost to myth and legend.

For those of you reading this review to this point, I ask you to dismiss from your mind that Water Harvest is a sci-fi and fantasy tale. This is because this book is a literary creation and an exceptional one at that. Eric's ability to write rises well above the average writer regardless of their station. What goes on in his mind and is then transferred to the page is more magical than any Viizar. In fact, since the world's best writers state you should read at least as much as you write, it's easy to claim any writer would improve in their craft through and after reading the work of Eric Diehl.

If this review had you at passion, rest assured there's so much more for all of us, including this gushing fan. My friends, Eric Diehl has brought to us more installments of this saga, with more for us to discover. But let us not rush ahead, but truly enjoy the moment for what it should be.

The plot thickens when Cairn and his various colleagues find a way to catch the invaders unaware. All the while, Diehl provides exquisite visual description of what's taking place and does so in such a way that we're almost right there. We feel the adrenaline rush of the action while simultaneously experiencing the cerebral determination to recognize the tactics, weaponry, machinery, and tension on all involved.

Beyond that, we find Diehl would never allow a loss of the heart, the human element, and the continual darkness threatening what is just. And he brings the reader the best of drama through Cairn and the situations placing in peril all he holds dear as our story approaches its end.

As one would expect from a writer of Diehl's caliber, this story comes to a fitting ending only a story this amazing deserves. The characters we've come to love (and despise) find their way to an end of this adventure so perfectly.

Overall, this story cannot be recommended enough! Furthermore, anyone who enjoys fun and talented writing would find true joy in Diehl's other works. One can only hope he eventually receives the recognition he deserves.
