We Were Soldiers Way Back Then

We Were Soldiers Way Back Then

We were soldiers,

Way back then.

We were merely boys,

Trying to be men.

We fought for Mom,

And apple pie.

We fought for freedom,

And a politician’s lie.

Weapons of mass destruction.

And God on our side,

We defended our way of life,

With massive genocide.

No ticker-tape parade,

On our return.

Educate our kids,

So they’ll never learn.

Somewhere at sometime,

I fell off the beam,

Went round the bend,

It would seem.

Did I snap?

Or did I slowly break up?

Was it only a dream?

Or thirteen months and a wake-up?

“Wasn’t the same after the war”,

The chorus will repeatedly say.

Brave boys trying to be men,

Are reduced to a single cliché.

But “we” did,

What “they” never would.

“We” fought,

Like “they” never could,

And the principles,

For which “we” stood,

Were then, and are now,

For the common good.

Wisdom is sacrificed,

For greed and hate,

Nourishment is a two dollar meal,

On a three dollar plate.

Some of us still honor,

The oath to defend.

And we feel like boys,

Trying to be men.

We were merely boys,

Trying to be men

Did we barely survive?

Or did we die back then?

I Wish My Heart Was Made Of Stone

I wish humankind,

Were kind and color blind,

Could feel my soul,

And read my mind.

My heart and mind,

Should be so pure,

That my existence,

Could be a cure.

As blind eyes are turned,

From war’s sacrifice,

I wish my eyes,

Were made of ice.

I wish my life,

Was an open book,

And love would take,

A second look.

I wish my hair,

Was red-hot fire,

And I would not have,

This burning desire.

I wish my tears,

Were made of gold.

I’d shower kind hearts,

That are tossed or sold.

My heart should be made,

Of the hardest stone,

If I’m only to exist,

So all alone.

Oh Micky!!!!!! Again and again you pierce my heart with words like a sword.

Maybe it's true....He was never the same again........ Why should he be?

You are one of the few , Micky. You've seen how disgracefully man can behave, yet you still look at the good in everyone. Not many men in your position would want to live by the Golden Rule, as you do.

I'm proud to know you through the written word. I'd be even more proud to ever meet you.

Two great poems, Micky! And I'm sure you and your friend turned into two great men. War does change a person, and can send one over board mentally and physically, but because you are here today and can write this amazing hub, shows you survived and you still have a good heart and are a good man. I appreciate everything you went through for your country and for yourself, I couldnt ask for a better soldier.
