What Don't They Want You To Know?

My Credentials for Writing This Hub

  • I am not a conspiracy theorist but I am critical of the jackals (Koch Brothers, ExxonMobil, Senator Inhofe) who run this country. I am even critical of myself which you will notice if you read carefully.
  • I have done many other hubs (and lenses) on space.
  • I have studied astronomy in college.
  • I have had writing classes and done many essays. That said, I generally ignore rules of anything except spelling and grammar.
  • This may form the basis of a book. There is a deep well of material on both the physics of outer space as well as the philosophy behind why we go and the cultural imperatives in the so-called space movement.

The Reason For This Hub

This entire hub is about exploring why NASA (Never A Straight Answer) decided to post a job opening for a telescope director with the requirement that whoever gets the position must have a top secret security clearance.

As is usual for me, there will be lots of meandering along the way to the answer because I think that the journey should be as much fun as the destination. However, what is unusual is that I avoid an answer and give you the resources to get the answer yourself. I call that empowerment.

I also toss in conspiracy theory (little or none of which I buy into) so that the powers that be will write us off as nuts and kooks and not kill us — always important if you're like me and enjoy being alive.

The James Webb Telescope

This will be an automated orbiting observatory in the manner of The Hubble. However, it will be optimized for infrared observations rather than visible observations.

JWST Mirror Installation

“the premier observatory of the next decade, serving thousands of astronomers worldwide, and studying every phase in the history of our Universe, ranging from the first luminous glows after the Big Bang, to the formation of solar systems capable of supporting life on planets like Earth, to the evolution of our own Solar System.”

Visible and Infra Red

The James Webb Telescope Director Must Have Top Secret Clearance

The telescope will be studying objects billions of light-years away which means what is observed happened billions of years ago. In other words, "far far away, long long ago" to paraphrase the opening of a certain movie. And not on the strictly visible optical part of the spectrum but infrared astronomy. Suitable for spotting hot stars and not much else. Exactly what it is designed to do.

So why should distant galaxies from before the existence of Earth be a matter of national security? Is fossil light a military threat? This is the part in the movie where you should laugh out loud at the sheer stupidity and over-reaching of an apparatus that stamps TOP SECRET on everything and would stamp it on you too if you got too close to the bureaucrats and stood still long enough for them to press that indelible ink onto your forehead with their rubber stamp. Our government is so out-of-control, so arrogant, so stupid, so blind, so totalitarian that it can no longer restrain itself in its desire to suffocate the American people. We the people are supposed to pay taxes to support this kind of nonsense but vote in elections as uninformed citizens. They hide the truth about everything from us so that we cannot make rational informed decisions as adults. We literally cannot give informed consent because we are not informed. We instead get disinformation.

You cannot run a democracy on ignorance of truth and facts. And, as we see daily in the news, the system is breaking down. It cannot run. Gridlock. Or worse, running in reverse back to the Dark Ages (complete with plague and inquisition), backwards over a cliff. Even lemmings go head first over a cliff. We are going bass ackwards.

In the supposed home of freedom and democracy, we are denied the tools of freedom and democracy. America has not been a free nation since the Patriot Act went into force and wiped out the Bill of Rights. The Supreme Court sanctioned the ghastly concept of corporate personhood and allowed unlimited secret spending on elections so that politicians could be legally bought and sold. We have the illusion of freedom without the reality. Any one who has travelled to other countries knows that many (if not most) of them have far greater levels of freedom than the country where country stars and their minions are ready to beat you unconscious if you say in public what I just said. I will repeat in case you missed it: America is not a free country. I am proud to be an American and I love America but I am ashamed of our government and ashamed of the people who keep voting for Republicans (and Democrats). Those self-deluded fools. Excuse me, I meant to say those self-deluded poorly-educated low-IQ people. F-O-O-L-S however is more succinct.

The Bible says that I should avoid calling anyone a fool. Well, in my own defense, I backed off a little and I applied it to a category and did not name names of individuals. Moreover, the opposite of the wise is the fool. I did not make up the fact of them being opposite. Shakespeare has the jester say it well.

Fool: "Thy asses are gone about 'em. The reason why the seven stars are no more than seven is a pretty reason."

King Lear: "Because they are not eight?"

Fool: "Yes, indeed: thou wouldst make a good fool."

King Lear Act 1, Scene 5

They may be referring to The Pleiades which actually contains seven bright stars and several that have grown dimmer over the time since the first cavemen stared at them.

quote from Steven Aftergood

So why does its Director need to have a Top Secret/SCI security clearance, as specified in the job description posted last month on USA Jobs?

Clearly, the secrets of the universe do not lend themselves to, or require, national security classification controls, let alone non-disclosure agreements or polygraph testing.

The Ballad of Serenity Lyrics by Sonny Rhodes

Take my love, take my land
Take me where I cannot stand
I don't care, I'm still free
You can't take the sky from me.

Take me out to the black
Tell them I ain't comin' back
Burn the land and boil the sea
You can't take the sky from me.

Leave the men where they lay
They'll never see another day
Lost my soul, lost my dream
You can't take the sky from me.

I feel the black reaching out
I hear its song without a doubt
I still hear and I still see
That you can't take the sky from me.

Lost my love, lost my land
Lost the last place I could stand
There's no place I can be
Since I've found Serenity

And you can't take the sky from me.

Firefly, Interstellar and a dismal future

I was one of the last people ever to become a fan of Firefly long, long after the show left the air cancelled before its time.

It was dead on arrival as the Fox executives insisted on showing episodes out of order (so that you could not follow season arc) and the usual moving the show around on the schedule so that you could not find it and pre-empting it for everything they could find to disrupt viewership.

I have never considered myself a Browncoat. Fan yes, Browncoat no. Never got on any forum nor live chat room long enough to make friends. So years after finally discovering the show and binge watching on Netflix, I had no reason to expect any revelations or insights to come out of the show. After all, the show did not invent the idea of bad government. MKULTRA was partly declassified years before the show was ever made. The generation of The Sixties researched enough and saw young people their own age coming home in boxes and body bags from Vietnam. So Joss Whedon did not invent disillusionment with the government.

So imagine my surprise over the past few days (November 2014) when --

1. I accidentally discovered that the singer Sonny Rhodes whom I assumed to be some white country singer turns out to be a black Delta blues man. I obviously am not a musicologist. I guess the gravelly voice fooled me. In my own defense, I also discovered that most of the chart-topping bass funk lines of the Motown era were made by a suburban housewife and mother of three who happened to be white. In America, you can never assume.

2. I always knew that the opening introduction of Firefly by Captain Mal was a direct reference to stupid man-made climate change (and refusal to reverse it) and oil and mining companies sucking the Earth dry. Seems that the new movie Interstellar (I saw the premiere) picks up where the Firefly introduction leaves off. Without a spoiler in case someone reading this has not seen Interstellar, if they decide to do a sequel, then if Cooper goes to find Brand, let's just say that the world where she landed will look familiar and perhaps Old West looking like Firefly. If you have read or heard any reviews of Interstellar, then you already know why the astronaut turned farmer is turning back to being an astronaut.

3. China is now openly acknowledging that it is militarizing space (just like the USA). The US and China are both in violation of international treaties that ban militarization of space. Other countries wisely do not waste money on military in space because all it would take is one nuclear war and the capitals and home countries of these two foolish nations would be gone. Along with the rest of Earth. Any space colonies they establish will be stranded and on their own. Stranded colonies is also a theme you will encounter. Significantly, Joss Whedon saw America and China as the primary shapers of a totalitarian military Alliance where people speak a mixture of English and Mandarin. Whedon got the totalitarian part right because China is communist and the USA is fascist with the Patriot Act nullifying the Bill of Rights and the NSA spying on everyone. They don't even deny it.

Read on. There is more.

Maffei 2 The Hidden Galaxy

actually they CAN take the sky from you

Your taxes pay for the manned space program but you cannot go into space. Even billionaires have to go to formerly communist Russia to take a trip to space because the space agency of supposedly capitalist America does not allow non-government people to go.

Your taxes pay for the unmanned space program but now they are going to censor astronomy.

Too bad Conservative Republicans are conservative and republican in name only. Fiscal conservatives would chop the budget of NASA to zero for these outrages and republicans would care enough about the republic to do something more constructive than being obstructionist, denying the first black president any accomplishments (every president Republican and Democrat since FDR has been trying to get health care reform passed), racist, climate change denying, and determined to pump as much fracking poison into the groundwater as possible. The dictionary defines republic as one where power is held by the people.

Censoring astronomy. They really are trying to take the sky from you.

Don't forget your aluminum hat!

Actually you should since exposure to aluminum has been identified as a possible cause of Alzheimer's Disease.

So ignore the conspiracy theory stuff and focus on the fact that your government holds you in contempt as an ignoramus. Moreover, they are the ones making you ignorant by keeping truth and facts from you. I speak, of course, of a Congress that refuses to admit that climate change is real, is happening, is dangerous, and they refuse to act to reverse it. Instead they are anti-science. And science that does not make weapons, such as astronomy, is now being censored.

It is hard to keep the poorly-educated low-IQ types quiet (not running things) when politicians in Congress get in league with science-bashing preachers and bash science too.

By nature, scientists are reluctant to express an opinion because their scientific training teaches them to think twice and say nothing. This is a shame because scientists are the few people who actually know what they are talking about when they speak about the subject matter of their particular discipline. In other words, engineers and meteorologists (TV weathermen) and others do not know what they are talking about when they say climate change is not real. Climatologists know what they are talking about because they study climate. And climatologists have been unanimous for decades that climate change is real and a clear and present danger. Look at the new frost zone maps that gardeners use. That is climate change like it or not. Islands in Chesapeake Bay and parishes in southern Louisiana lost to rising sea level. That is climate change like it or not.

What does this have to do with space? What does climate change have to do with space? What does conspiracy theory have to do with space?

This: The conspiracy theory extremists are at the fringe like canaries in a coal mine. They may be loopy but in this instance they are on to something. If climate change goes out of control with runaway Greenhouse Effect, then Earth could become more like Venus. The entire human race will have to find a new home if it refuses to reverse climate change. Reverse or die. Apparently a lot of people prefer to die than to see the big picture that is easy for me to see with one glance.

Galaxies in hiding

Galaxies in Hiding

There are nearly 200 galaxies within the marked circles in this image from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope. These are part of the Perseus-Pisces supercluster of galaxies located 250 million light-years away. Normally, galaxies beyond our Milky Way are hidden from view when they happen to fall behind the plane of our galaxy. This is due to foreground dust standing in the way.

Spitzer's Galactic Legacy Infrared Mid-Plane Survey Extraordinaire 360, or Glimpse 360 project, is pointing Spitzer away from the galactic center, to complete a full 360-degree scan of the Milky Way plane. It has captures many images in the process, such as this one, revealing hidden objects.
