What I wouldn't have done for you ........verse

Updated on January 7, 2014

A white chariot at your gate awaiting
your last long look in
the mirror

My last dollar on dresses and linen
so you might ask
how do I look

Tea cups and dolls on your shelves
Lilacs growing just outside
your door

Let you pick the jacket I would
wear to escort your
arm in mine

The last dance at the ball
and a silken pillow as you
rest your head riding home

What I wouldn't done for you

But you chose
something
someone
somewhere else

The chariot now ?
sits peeling in the sun
the gilded gold trim tarnished

The velvet linings of our
seats torn and faded
wheels twisting in the suns heat

And what of me you ask?

What I wouldn't have
done for you.........

Beautiful poem and very emotional! Perhaps she didn't want the gilded chariot and the life that went with it. Perhaps she yearned for a more simple life. Sometimes women don't want to be given the moon and the stars. Sometimes they just want to be loved.

This may be my favorite of everything you've written. I absolutely love this. It's masculine yet vulnerable. A beautiful piece.

So beautiful and sad. She doesn't know what joy she has missed.

This surely is the most eloquent and elegant paean to unrequited love I've ever read. It's so lovely that it's not even as depressing as most are. You're a master poet, whatever the fate of the gilded carriage!
